VWFS Guides Accessibility for Workplace EV Charging
VWFS guides businesses to ensure EV charge points are accessible for all employees, including those with disabilities, on company premises

As EVs become increasingly popular, Volkswagen Financial Services Fleet (VWFS Fleet), a leading fleet leasing provider, urges UK companies to prioritise accessibility when installing EV charge points on business premises.

Importance of inclusive charging infrastructure

Currently, charge points on company sites are governed by more stringent regulations than the public charging network.

However, VWFS Fleet emphasises that businesses should still strive to make EV charging accessible to all, including company car and commercial van drivers and other employees who might need to charge their EVs at work.

Need for accessible charging

With approximately 14 million disabled people in the UK and estimates predicting 2.7 million disabled drivers by 2033, accessible onsite charging is becoming increasingly important.

As more disabled individuals commute in EVs, they will require accessible charging solutions at their workplaces.

The push towards EVs

The shift towards EVs in the UK is accelerating, driven by the upcoming ban on new petrol and diesel vehicle sales from 2035.

The transition is supported by a rapidly expanding public charging network, which is now subject to stringent regulations ensuring accessibility for all users, including those with disabilities.

Jonathan Jenkins, Head of Innovation, Motability Operations, comments that:

“The transition to EVs is inevitable and we are fully embracing it.

"Seeing the rest of the industry moving in the same direction is encouraging.

"However, ensuring that everyone can shift to EVs is crucial.”

PAS 1899:2022 – The new accessibility standard

The introduction of PAS 1899:2022 marks a significant step towards inclusive EV charging.

Based on research by the charity the Motability Foundation, this standard outlines comprehensive guidelines for making EV charge points accessible to disabled drivers, passengers and pedestrians.

Published in October of last year, PAS 1899:2022 covers various aspects of charging, including the physical environment, location, spacing, design, height, weight, ease of use and accessibility of information.

Implementing accessibility standards in the workplace

While PAS 1899:2022 is not currently mandatory for private or business premises, companies should adopt its guidelines when installing EV charge points.

Doing so will prepare businesses for future regulations and ensure a more inclusive environment for all employees.

Recommendations for workplace charging

Companies must go beyond merely installing charge points to meet the growing demand for EV charging at workplaces.

The British Standards Institute (BSI) recommends providing at least one accessible parking bay per disabled employee and a minimum of 5% of the total parking capacity for visiting drivers.

VWFS Fleet advocates for similar provisions for workplace EV charging spaces.

Comprehensive charging solutions

The guidelines in PAS 1899:2022 address the full spectrum of charging needs, from the physical setup of charge points to user accessibility.

For businesses planning to install workplace charge points, whether for depot charging or individual employee use, adhering to public charging accessibility standards will ensure that disabled individuals can use the charge points as quickly as any other workplace equipment.

Supporting sustainable fleets

VWFS Fleet assists businesses on their journey toward more sustainable fleets.

By offering guidance and support, VWFS Fleet helps employers ensure EV charging is accessible for all, ensuring no one is left behind in the transition to EVs.

In conclusion, as the UK moves towards an electric future, businesses must prioritise accessibility in their EV charging infrastructure.

By following the guidelines set out in PAS 1899:2022 and considering the needs of all employees, companies can create a more inclusive and supportive workplace. VWFS Fleet stands ready to support businesses in making this critical transition.
