First Student and El Dorado Springs R-2 Schools are transitioning all regular bus routes to a fully-electric fleet in a groundbreaking sustainability move

In a groundbreaking move, El Dorado Springs R-2 Schools, in the US, in collaboration with First Student, has transitioned its entire fleet of regular education bus routes to electric school buses (ESBs). The buses will provide hundreds of students with a cleaner, quieter, safer transportation experience.

The electric fleet, comprising 13 state-of-the-art electric buses, not only makes the district the first in Missouri to fully adopt electric buses but also places it among a select few nationwide to embrace the transition to eMobility.

As North America’s leading school transportation solutions provider, First Student ensures students have a safe and efficient start and finish to every school day. Its fleet of approximately 40,000 buses is backed by highly trained drivers and a strong safety record.

First Student offers comprehensive transportation services, including full-service transportation management, special-needs transportation, route optimisation and maintenance.

Making a positive impact

The advantages of electric buses go beyond environmental benefits.

Kevin Matthews, Head of Electrification at First Student

Kevin Matthews, Head of Electrification at First Student states: "With zero emissions, improved air quality and reduced noise pollution, the deployment of these electric school buses will have an immediate, positive impact on the community.

“We appreciate the partnership with El Dorado Springs R-2 Schools to enhance the bus-riding experience for students. As more districts recognise the long-term benefits of electric school buses, First Student is proud to lead the charge toward a more sustainable future by embracing this cutting-edge transportation solution.”

The transition from diesel to electric buses aims to significantly reduce the district’s environmental footprint, cutting over 700,000 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions annually. It marks a significant step in creating a healthier environment for students and the broader community.

Brad Steward, Superintendent of El Dorado Springs R-2 Schools,

Brad Steward, Superintendent of El Dorado Springs R-2 Schools, highlighted the district’s dedication to sustainability: “The transition to electric school buses demonstrates our commitment to sustainable initiatives and support for innovative technologies.

“These electric school buses will benefit the well-being of our students and the community, setting a positive example for future generations. We are excited to work with First Student on our shared goal of greener, safer and more efficient transportation for our families.”

Funding mechanism

The deployment of the ESBs was funded by the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Clean School Bus Program. The initiative supports school districts in reducing emissions and transitioning to greener technologies.

First Student has secured funding to deploy approximately 1,200 electric buses across the US under this programme.

First Student has committed to converting 30,000 of its diesel buses to electric by 2035, aiming to improve the health and well-being of students and communities nationwide. With more than 400 electric buses already operating across North America, First Student is nearing the milestone of 5 million miles driven by ESB.
