Voltpost Secures Grants for Nationwide Lamppost EV Chargers
Voltpost, the pioneering EV charging company, has secured grants from the US Joint Office of Energy and Transportation's Communities Taking Charge Accelerator program to deploy lamppost-based EV chargers in communities across the US.
The funding will significantly enhance affordable and convenient Level 2 EV charging access, specifically targeting areas where drivers lack access to home chargers.
Transforming mobility with lamppost charging solutions
Voltpost is transforming the EV charging infrastructure by retrofitting existing lampposts into modular, upgradable Level 2 chargers powered by a mobile app.
The first-of-its-kind solution in the US provides communities with scalable, cost-effective charging options, minimising the expense, installation time and environmental footprint typically associated with traditional chargers.
With the ability to install chargers in minutes on public or privately-owned lampposts, Voltpost aims to democratise charging access across diverse neighbourhoods.
"Voltpost is on a mission to decarbonise mobility by democratising charging access and empowering communities nationwide," says Jeffrey Prosserman, CEO and Co-Founder of Voltpost. "By leveraging lampposts to cost-effectively and rapidly increase access to EV charging infrastructure, we aim to enable more drivers across the country to confidently transition from gas to electric and mitigate the transportation sector's climate impact."
Grant funding for expanding EV access
Voltpost has received US$2.6m in grant funding from the Joint Office to deploy 75 Level 2 chargers across the Tri-state region comprising New Jersey, New York and Connecticut. Chargers will be positioned in key locations, including curbside areas and commuter lots, making EV charging more accessible to individuals without home charging options.
The project will be carried out in collaboration with a range of partners, including Zipcar, CityFi, INF Associates, Empire Clean Cities and Clean Cities NJ.
In addition to enhancing charging access for everyday drivers, Voltpost's solution will support the deployment of up to 30 Zipcar EVs in the Tri-state region.
Zipcar's car-sharing model offers an alternative sustainable transportation option for low-income residents and people living in multifamily housing, who are often excluded from the benefits of home-based charging.
"Empowering communities with access to electric vehicles and charging infrastructure is a pivotal step toward a more equitable and sustainable future," adds Angelo Adams, Head of Zipcar.
"By providing communities with electric car-sharing options, we aim to ensure that more people can easily access and experience the benefits of clean, shared transportation."
A commitment to equity and sustainable growth
Voltpost is dedicated to fostering sustainability and equity through its projects. As part of the ongoing commitment, the Voltpost and Zipcar partnership will prioritise using M/WBE contractors for infrastrucure installation, with contractors receiving prevailing wages in each state.
Voltpost will offer Zipcar memberships and driving credits to Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program (EVITP) trainees. Additionally, Zipcar plans to place a portion of its fleet in Justice40 communities, ensuring that the benefits of EV technology are equitably distributed.
"We are excited to see how Voltpost's platform will support sustainable mobility across underserved regions," comments Kyle Ragan from CityFi.
"We're proud to collaborate with Voltpost to advance the deployment of public charging solutions, helping cities create scalable and efficient infrastructure."
Partnering for nationwide expansion
Voltpost is collaborating with the Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) through the City Climate Innovation Challenge to expand its charger deployments across the US.
The initiative will focus on using curbside charging solutions and optimising charger access in cities like Arizona, California, Massachusetts, Maryland, New York, Oregon, Tennessee and Washington D.C.
Voltpost is committed to ensuring that at least 40% of these deployments serve Justice40 communities, which are typically underserved areas with a focus on improving environmental and economic conditions.
"Equitable access to EV charging is essential for building a sustainable and inclusive future," says Michelle Kinman, SVP of Market Transformation at LACI. "We are excited to collaborate with Voltpost to accelerate the deployment of innovative, cost-effective chargers in cities across the country to ensure more communities benefit from sustainable transportation options."
EV adoption moving forward
Voltpost's efforts to expand EV charging infrastructure through lampposts are crucial in reducing transportation emissions and increasing access to clean energy solutions.
By democratising EV charging, Voltpost is helping ensure that transitioning to EVs is not just an option for those with access to home chargers but an achievable goal for all communities.
With continued grant support and partnerships with organisations like Zipcar and LACI, Voltpost's innovative approach is poised to accelerate the adoption of sustainable, zero-emission transportation nationwide.
