JATCO Launches Sunderland Plant for EV Powertrain Production
JATCO Ltd, a global pioneer in automotive transmission systems, has officially opened a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Sunderland, UK. The development marks a significant milestone for the North East's advanced manufacturing sector, creating up to 183 skilled jobs and solidifying the region's role as a hub for EV innovation.
Located within the prestigious International Advanced Manufacturing Park (IAMP), the new factory will produce cutting-edge 3-in-1 EV powertrains for Nissan's nearby Sunderland plant.
The facility represents a US$59.49m investment, demonstrating JATCO's commitment to advancing EV technology and supporting the UK's growing green economy.
Powering EV innovation: The new 3-in-1powertrain
JATCO's Sunderland plant will focus on producing the advanced 3-in-1 powertrain, which integrates the motor, inverter and reducer into a compact, lightweight system. This innovative solution highlights JATCO's reputation as a leader in electrification technologies, enhancing Nissan EVs' performance and efficiency.
Tomoyoshi Sato, CEO at JATCO, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating:
"I am so proud to officially open JATCO UK in the North East of England. We are delighted to bring the manufacture of our 3-in-1 powertrain to the UK, our fourth overseas production plant alongside facilities in Mexico, China and Thailand."
Strategic location and local partnerships
The Sunderland site, spanning 138,840 square feet, benefits from its strategic location at IAMP.
Its proximity to Nissan Motor Manufacturing (UK) enables streamlined supply chains, reducing costs and bolstering efficiency. National government and local councils support the facility's opening, illustrating strong public-private collaboration.
"This announcement is a massive vote of confidence in the UK economy. It boosts our thriving auto industry and secures hundreds of jobs in Sunderland."
Supporting Nissan's EV36Zero vision
The new facility aligns with Nissan's EV36Zero project, a transformative initiative centred on three new all-electric vehicles powered by renewable energy. The project includes future electric versions of Nissan's flagship Qashqai and JUKE crossovers and a replacement for the Nissan LEAF.
Alan Johnson, Senior Vice President for Nissan AMIEO, highlighted the partnership's impact:
"Welcoming a key supplier to the North East of England provides a big boost to the efficiency of our supply chain. We look forward to continuing our long and successful partnership as we push towards our electric future."
Local investment and regional growth
JATCO's investment is a testament to the appeal of the North East as a destination for advanced manufacturing. The facility joins a growing cluster of automotive businesses at IAMP, contributing to the region's economic growth and fostering innovation.
"JATCO's choice to invest in the North East underscores the region's pivotal role in the future of the automotive and EV industries. It highlights the strength of our workforce and the opportunities within our Investment Zone."
A Bright Future for JATCO UK
With plans to begin localising EV powertrains for Nissan models by 2026, JATCO UK aims to play a key role in the UK's transition to sustainable transportation. Its Sunderland facility exemplifies how strategic investments and innovative technologies can drive economic growth while supporting the global shift toward electrification.
As Tomoyoshi concluded:
"We look forward to supporting Nissan's EV36Zero project with these electric powertrains, paving the way for a cleaner and more connected future."
