Rolls-Royce has announced a US$370.6m investment in Goodwood to expand bespoke craftsmanship, elevate luxury experiences and drive its all-electric future

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars has announced a monumental US$370.6m investment to expand its manufacturing facility in Goodwood, UK.

The significant development highlights the brand's commitment to bespoke craftsmanship, luxurious customer experiences and an all-electric future.

Commitment to bespoke excellence

The expansion will accommodate Rolls-Royce's growing portfolio of bespoke and coachbuild projects. The custom vehicles, tailored to reflect clients' unique tastes and lifestyles, resonate strongly with discerning customers.

Chris Brownridge, Chief Executive, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars

Chris Brownridge, CEO at Rolls-Royce, highlights the importance of the investment, stating: "In 2024, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars reaffirmed its position as an authentic luxury house by crafting its history's most complex, personal and valuable motor cars. The momentum means it is necessary for us to invest more than $US390m in extending the home of Rolls-Royce.

"The investment represents our most substantial financial commitment to Goodwood since its opening in 2003 and a significant vote of confidence in the Rolls-Royce marque, securing our future here in the UK."

The marque's 2024 performance was marked by a record year for bespoke projects and the third-best sales result in its history.

Bespoke craftsmanship reached new heights, with a 10% increase in bespoke content value per car year-on-year. Highlights included intricate embroidery, holographic paint finishes and marquetry made from over 500 pieces of wood.

Expanding Goodwood: A key milestone

The Goodwood facility has been central to Rolls-Royce's success since its opening on January 1, 2003.

Initially employing 300 people and producing one car daily, the site now boasts more than 2,500 employees and delivers up to 28 vehicles daily. However, the building itself has remained largely unchanged.

"This investment is vital for the company's expansion plans and its position as a luxury manufacturer within the UK," Chris adds.

A 2023 study by the London School of Economics revealed that Rolls-Royce contributes approximately US$650m annually to the UK economy, highlighting its importance to 'UK PLC.'

The expansion project, granted planning permission in 2024, coincides with Rolls-Royce's celebration of the 120th anniversary of the co-founders' first meeting.

Transition to an electric future

The updated Goodwood facility will support Rolls-Royce's shift towards an all-electric lineup. Following the success of its first electric model, the Spectre, Rolls-Royce is poised to introduce its next electric vehicle in 2025.

The Spectre has exceeded expectations, becoming the most requested Rolls-Royce in Europe and ranking second globally.

Rolls-Royce is firmly committed to achieving an all-electric future, reinforcing its role as a pioneer in luxury EVs.

Elsewhere, Rolls-Royce continues to enhance its bespoke offerings through private offices in key global markets, including New York, Seoul, Dubai and Shanghai. The creative hubs foster collaboration between clients and designers, enabling bespoke projects with a 25% higher average value.

Additionally, the exclusive Whispers app saw a 55% rise in membership in 2024, offering clients privileged insights and opportunities.

Global success and market expansion

In 2024, Rolls-Royce introduced four new models, including the Cullinan Series II and Ghost Series II, alongside their Black Badge variants. These models contributed to global sales of 5,712 vehicles, the third-highest total in the marque's history.

North America remained the largest sales region, while Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific achieved record sales. Demand for bespoke features grew significantly among younger Chinese clients, reflecting Rolls-Royce's evolving customer base.

Smaller markets, such as Malaysia and the Netherlands, also contributed to growth. Established markets, including the UAE, Germany and Japan, showcased some of the year's most ambitious bespoke commissions.

Chris concludes: "2024's record bespoke results demonstrate our clients are increasingly drawn to the marque to create ever more ambitious and valuable motor cars, thereby enjoying the exceptional and highly personalised experience that Rolls-Royce ownership unlocks."
