2024 marks a pivotal year for EVs, with growth, regulation and debates on incentives as governments navigate the path to a sustainable transition

What happened in December 2024:

Jaguar's ambitious Reimagine campaign has ignited a lively debate across the automotive industry. The bold redesign and branding efforts have drawn both praise and criticism, but one undeniable outcome is the surge in brand awareness. Google Trends data reveals a significant spike in searches for Jaguar, underlining the campaign's success in capturing global attention.

Whether celebrated or contested, the campaign has positioned Jaguar at the centre of industry conversations—a feat that cannot be overlooked.

An Industry Perspective

EV Magazine offers a third-party perspective, sharing the insights of Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, on Jaguar's Reimagine campaign. Jeff attended the launch event and shared his candid thoughts on LinkedIn, including his firsthand impressions of the ambitious unveiling.

"On my way from Miami to São Paulo for our first race of the season, having spent the evening as a guest of JLR at their Jaguar reimagining event. Given the noise generated by the new logo reveal and the teaser campaign, I was asked by The Guardian Newspaper to write a few words for them on my personal thoughts. I may regret doing this, but given I'm one of only a few who have seen the Type 00 in the flesh, I'm sharing it here in case anyone is interested," shared Jeff.

A Lifelong Car Enthusiast's Perspective

Jeff recounted his experience owning the all-electric iPace, praising its quality but noting it lacked the emotional connection he sought. "It was a really good car. I enjoyed driving it but didn't smile every time I got in it. And as a lifelong car nut, that's what I want from a car—and Jaguar knows that too."

He addressed the mixed reactions to the logo and teaser campaign, noting that much of the criticism likely came from individuals who have never owned a Jaguar. For Jeff, the event was about the product itself. "I have no idea if Jaguar's intention was to guarantee such attention on tonight's launch, but if it was, then they've certainly got it."

A Bold and Disruptive Design

Jeff described the new Type 00 design as disruptive and head-turning, eliciting mixed reactions. "Perhaps not always in a good way, but I say 'thank God' for that. Inspector Morse wouldn't go near it, but his grandson, who just launched a cybersecurity start-up, might."

The launch event itself was equally groundbreaking. "It's industrial and edgy, at least in car launch terms," Jeff observed, highlighting a DJ set by British rapper Skepta and the presence of influencers and cultural tastemakers. "It's a massive departure from what's gone before. Too big of a departure? Maybe. Who knows? Frankly, who cares?"

Community Reactions

Jeff's reflections prompted a wave of comments from the industry and Jaguar enthusiasts. One commenter remarked, "This is a brilliant example of adaptive innovation. The brand pivoted from a tough mid-range sector to target a premium luxury market. Hats off, team Jag."

Another added, "Jeff, thanks for the balanced review—it's so much more insightful than the emotionally charged noise circulating around the new JLR."

2025 and beyond

While the bold strategy has generated buzz, the true impact of Jaguar's Reimagine campaign will take time to unfold. New models are expected to hit the market in the next one to two years. Jeff concluded, "I really like it and if I had a Type 00, I think it would make me smile."

Jaguar's daring approach is a gamble, but it reflects the brand's willingness to take risks and redefine its identity in a competitive industry. The coming years will reveal whether this bold move reshapes Jaguar's future or remains a divisive chapter in its history.
