Panasonic and Lucid partner to power the Gravity SUV, blending groundbreaking range, performance, and sustainability in a revolutionary EV design

Panasonic Energy Co, a global leader in lithium-ion batteries, has joined forces with Lucid Group, Inc., maker of some of the world's most advanced EVs, to power the highly anticipated Lucid Gravity Grand Touring. The cutting-edge SUV boasts industry-leading range, performance, and interior versatility, all made possible by Panasonic's next-generation EV battery cells.

Redefining the SUV with Lucid Gravity

The Lucid Gravity introduces a revolutionary class of SUVs designed from scratch to deliver uncompromising performance and practicality.

With an EPA-estimated range of up to 450 miles, the vehicle achieves efficiency through a battery pack that is 40% smaller than competitors. It offers up to 120 cubic feet of cargo space in a mid-size SUV footprint, comfortably accommodating up to seven adults.

Peter Rawlinson, CEO of Lucid

Peter Rawlinson, CEO of Lucid, explained, "Lucid Gravity is truly the first SUV that does not force customers to compromise.

It combines the space of a full-size SUV, the performance of a sports car, and an impressively small battery pack that preserves earth's precious resources."

Next-generation battery technology

The Lucid Gravity is powered by Panasonic Energy's 2170 cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells, which deliver an energy density of over 800Wh/L.

These high-capacity cells, designed with Lucid, meet rigorous standards for fast charging, safety, longevity, and performance.

Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO at Panasonic Energy

Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO of Panasonic Energy, highlighted the collaboration's success: "By combining our high-energy density cells with Lucid's technology, we have developed an SUV with unparalleled performance and range, setting new benchmarks in the EV industry."

Proven excellence in lithium-ion technology

Panasonic Energy has established itself as a trusted name in EV batteries, supplying 15 billion lithium-ion cells globally by the end of 2023—equivalent to powering 3 million EVs without a single recall due to battery issues. The unblemished record emphasises Panasonic's commitment to safety, reliability, and innovation.

The partnership with Lucid began in 2022 through multi-year agreements. Panasonic's batteries were first integrated into Lucid's award-winning Air Pure, laying the foundation for their use in the Gravity models.

Lucid Gravity Grand Touring: Performance redefined

The Lucid Gravity Grand Touring, which entered production in December 2024 at Lucid's Arizona factory, offers an impressive 828 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in under 3.5 seconds. It is equipped with Panasonic's advanced batteries and starts at US$94,900.

Its sibling, the Lucid Gravity Touring, which will launch in late 2025 with a starting price of US$79,900, will also use Panasonic's 2170 cells. The cells are currently produced in Japan, but future production is planned at Panasonic's new Kansas facility.

A partnership for sustainability

Beyond performance, the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to sustainability. Lucid's smaller battery packs reduce material usage while delivering a superior range, aligning with Panasonic's vision of contributing to a sustainable society.

"Through advanced technology and collaboration with Panasonic, we've achieved a previously impossible combination of attributes in an SUV," Peter added.

The Lucid Gravity Grand Touring is more than an SUV—it represents the future of sustainable mobility. With its combination of groundbreaking performance, interior versatility, and reduced environmental impact, it sets a new standard for EVs.

Kazuo concluded, "This collaboration underscores our efforts to set new standards in the EV industry and contribute to a sustainable society."

With production underway and future models on the horizon, the Lucid-Panasonic partnership exemplifies the potential of innovation and collaboration in reshaping the automotive landscape.
