Windracers and Aviation Sans Frontières partner to deploy ULTRA drones for cost-effective aid delivery to remote African regions, starting in 2025

Windracers has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Aviation Sans Frontières to deploy its advanced ULTRA cargo drones for African humanitarian missions. Beginning in early 2025, these low-cost, self-flying aircraft, designed and manufactured in the UK, will deliver vital supplies to hard-to-reach areas for various humanitarian organisations.

Windracers ULTRA: Redefining long-distance cargo UAVs

The Windracers ULTRA is renowned as the world's leading long-distance heavy-lift cargo UAV. Capable of carrying over 100kg of payloads across a range of 1,000 km, ULTRA has already proven its capabilities through numerous Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) missions. These include:

  • Reconnaissance and resupply in Ukraine
  • Geological and Wildlife Surveying in Antarctica
  • Parcel deliveries off the Scottish and English coasts
  • Wildfire response missions
  • Parachute medical supply drops

Having operated in regions like Antarctica, North America, Europe, and the UK, ULTRA aims to expand its reach to Africa.

Autonomous operations for maximum impact

The ULTRA MK2 aircraft will perform BVLOS missions to deliver medical and other essential supplies and collect urgent samples in areas with limited infrastructure. It can also safely drop supplies using protective packaging and parachutes in remote or inaccessible locations.

Christian Georlette, Chair of Aviation Sans Frontières

Christian Georlette, Chair of Aviation Sans Frontières International, highlighted the partnership's transformative potential: "Over forty years ago, Aviation Sans Frontières created and proved the effectiveness of 'light aircraft' missions where humanitarian pilots and mechanics mobilised in the service of the poorest around the world. We impact people's lives where others don't or no longer go to fulfil our mission of providing a bespoke service for humanitarian impact."

Drones: The future of humanitarian logistics

As an early adopter of drone technology, Aviation Sans Frontières has embraced UAVs as a cost-effective and impactful solution for humanitarian delivery. "Drones are at the core of Aviation Sans Frontières' forward strategy," added Christian. "Working with Windracers ushers in the future of humanitarian and development aviation through the use of Windracers ULTRA, which carries sizable payloads per trip at a lower cost while taking human pilots out of harm's way."

Transforming logistics for greater humanitarian reach

Logistics remains a critical component of humanitarian aid, often accounting for 60% to 80% of expenses depending on the activity.

Stephen Wright, Founder and Group Executive Chairman of Windracers

Stephen Wright, Founder and Group Executive Chairman of Windracers highlighted the importance of the ULTRA's capabilities: "We developed ULTRA with this exact idea in mind, to provide low-cost means of delivering humanitarian aid to hard-to-reach locations for people who need help the most."

"The agreement with Aviation Sans Frontières completes the circle of 'lab to life' for Windracers ULTRA, and I am so very proud that the Windracers team will have the opportunity to deliver on this mission in partnership with Aviation Sans Frontières."

A new era in humanitarian aviation

The partnership marks a significant step forward in humanitarian aviation, leveraging cutting-edge drone technology to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and deliver critical supplies to those in need. As operations begin in Africa in 2025, the collaboration between Windracers and Aviation Sans Frontières promises to redefine the role of drones in humanitarian aid.
