BYD Partners with Huawei for Autonomous EV Tech Boost
BYD teams up with Huawei to enhance its premium EV lineup with cutting-edge autonomous driving technology, aiming to strengthen its position in the market

Chinese EV leader BYD has entered into a strategic partnership with tech giant Huawei to incorporate advanced autonomous driving technology into its Fangchengbao line of off-road EVs. The collaboration marks a significant step in BYD's push to enhance its presence in the premium automotive market and highlights the growing importance of autonomous technologies in the EV sector.

BYD's move upmarket

BYD's collaboration with Huawei is a key part of its strategy to penetrate the premium segment of the EV market. Historically, BYD has focused on more affordable models, but with this partnership, the company aims to elevate its brand image and profitability.

The first model to feature Huawei's Qiankun intelligent driving system will be the Bao 8 SUV, a flagship of the Fangchengbao lineup. The move is designed to position BYD as a serious contender in the premium EV space.

In 2024, BYD's premium brands, including Denza, Fangchengbao, and Yangwang, accounted for just 5% of the company's total sales. However, BYD is confident that integrating Huawei’s cutting-edge technology will drive significant growth in this segment, enhancing the appeal of its high-end models and boosting overall sales.

Huawei's expanding role in the EV industry

Huawei’s partnership with BYD highlights the tech giant’s increasing influence within the automotive industry, particularly in the realm of autonomous driving. Huawei has quickly emerged as a key supplier of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), a critical component for autonomous vehicles.

The collaboration with BYD is not Huawei’s first foray into the automotive sector. The tech company is also working with Volkswagen's Audi to supply ADAS technology for EVs targeted at the Chinese market.

These partnerships reflect Huawei’s growing role as a leader in automotive tech, positioning it as a crucial player in the evolving landscape of intelligent transportation.

BYD's technology strategy

BYD’s decision to partner with Huawei reflects the pressures faced by EV manufacturers to advance their smart driving capabilities. Despite BYD’s significant investments in developing its own ADAS technology, the company continues to rely on external suppliers for intelligent features in its premium models. For instance, BYD uses Momenta ADAS in its Denza vehicles.

The strategic reliance on partners like Huawei and Momenta allows BYD to accelerate the development of advanced technologies while maintaining its cost advantages through vertical integration.

By producing key components such as batteries in-house, BYD has managed to keep costs low, which is a significant competitive edge in the price-sensitive EV market.

The evolving EV landscape

The partnership between BYD and Huawei comes at a time of rapid growth and change in the global EV market. In 2020, EVs made up 6% of cars on European roads, with China leading global adoption. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated digital transformation in the automotive industry, highlighting the importance of online sales and contactless services—a trend pioneered by companies like Tesla.

Moreover, the pandemic exposed vulnerabilities in global supply chains, leading automakers to reconsider their "just-in-time" strategies in favour of a more resilient "just-in-case" approach. As the EV market evolves, the ability to adapt to these changes will be crucial for long-term success.

Future implications

The BYD-Huawei partnership could significantly impact the future of the EV industry, particularly in China. By combining BYD’s manufacturing prowess with Huawei’s tech expertise, the collaboration is likely to accelerate the development and adoption of autonomous driving technologies.

In effect, it could put pressure on other global EV manufacturers to form similar alliances, further driving innovation in the industry.

As the partnership unfolds, the automotive world will be watching closely to see how it shapes the future of electric and autonomous vehicles, both in China and beyond.

The collaboration between these two industry giants has the potential to redefine the standards of intelligent driving and set new benchmarks for the global EV market.
