Quinbrook invests US$121m in Aegis Energy to build the UK's first multi-energy refuelling hubs, reducing emissions and advancing fleet decarbonisation

Aegis Energy has announced a landmark US$121m investment from Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners, a global investment manager specialising in sustainable initiatives.

The funding will kickstart the construction of the UK's first clean, multi-energy refuelling hubs designed for commercial vehicles.

By addressing critical infrastructure gaps, Aegis Energy aims to support the transition of fleets to low—and zero-emission alternatives, a move that aligns with regulatory mandates and consumer demand.

Tackling the UK's largest emitting sector

Transport accounts for 29% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions, with commercial vehicles contributing 10%.

The push towards decarbonisation has become a strategic imperative for fleet operators, driven by regulatory bans on non-zero emission vehicles between 2035 and 2040.

However, infrastructure hurdles such as grid constraints and the impracticality of depot installations for many logistics operators have slowed progress.

Christopher Thorneycroft-Smith, Co-founder at Aegis Energy

Christopher Thorneycroft-Smith, Co-founder at Aegis Energy, highlighted these challenges:

"The lack of appropriate infrastructure is typically #1 or #2 on the list of barriers for fleet operators. Building depot infrastructure can be complex and grid connections are not easy or cheap to secure. Long-haul operations require top-up charges, and van drivers without access to at-home charging lose time elsewhere."

A pioneering network of multi-energy hubs

Aegis Energy's new hubs will offer clean energy options, including electric charging, HVO, hydrogen and bio-CNG, to accommodate diverse fleet needs. Designed to handle high-capacity demands, each hub will support simultaneous charging and refuelling for over 40 HGVs and 25 vans.

Additional amenities such as secure truck parking, clean driver facilities and rest areas will enhance the user experience.

The first hub is slated to open in early 2026, and an initial five-station network is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Sites have been identified in Sheffield, Immingham, Warrington, Corby, and Towcester. Aegis Energy plans to expand to 30 hubs nationwide by 2030, delivering an estimated annual carbon reduction of 14,300 tonnes per hub.

Driving the clean energy transition

Aegis Energy aims to enable more commercial vehicles to embrace low-carbon technologies by providing scalable public infrastructure.

The initiative complements broader trends, with over half of van drivers lacking access to home charging and many fleet operators unable to implement depot-based solutions.

Keith Gains, Managing Director and UK Regional Lead for Quinbrook

Keith Gains, Managing Director and UK Regional Lead for Quinbrook expressed enthusiasm for the project:

"Quinbrook is uniquely placed to capitalise on emerging investment opportunities that drive impactful emissions reduction in hard-to-abate sectors like transport. Supporting innovators like Aegis, we're excited to build market-leading refuelling hubs that bridge the gaps in clean energy infrastructure."

A strategic vision for sustainability

The investment marks Quinbrook's first foray into sustainable transport, complementing its existing portfolio of net-zero initiatives across solar, energy storage and grid support. Keith highlighted the importance of aligning with the UK's Zero Emission Vehicle mandate:

"Targets under the UK's Zero Emission Vehicle mandate highlight the existing gaps in the infrastructure needed to provide accessible clean energy to transport fleets. Aegis Energy's hubs are essential to closing this gap and supporting the country's transition."

Aegis Energy's Commitment to Decarbonisation

"Our hubs will enable fleets to choose how they transition while ensuring critical energy infrastructure is reliably available. Quinbrook's funding supports millions of vehicles in making a once-in-a-multi-generational change."

Keith Gains, Managing Director and UK Regional Lead for Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners

As utility costs remain volatile and environmental priorities intensify, Aegis Energy's innovative approach provides a robust foundation for the UK's future low-carbon transport. With the partnership, the company aims to lead the development of critical infrastructure for sustainable logistics, creating a cleaner, greener roadmap for commercial vehicle fleets.
