Formula E shapes EV technology, accelerates innovation and promotes sustainability, driving the evolution of electric mobility globally

Formula E, the premier electric racing series, has become a cornerstone for innovation and sustainability in the automotive world by merging high-speed competition with cutting-edge technology.

The racing platform provides manufacturers with unparalleled opportunities to enhance EV development.

Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E

Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E, says: "Formula E is not just about the racing element; it's about demonstrating the car's technology. Quite simply, our cars start the race with roughly half of the energy they need to finish the race; the rest is delivered by regeneration in the race."

Accelerating technology development

Manufacturers use Formula E as a dynamic test bed for advancing EV technologies. The high-pressure environment fosters rapid innovation, leading to significant battery performance and energy efficiency advancements. Examples of breakthroughs include:

  • Jaguar: Improved the range of its I-PACE SUV by 10% through efficiency software developed on the track.
  • Nissan: Achieved an impressive 181% increase in battery capacity through on-track learnings.

Knowledge transfer from track to road

Insights from Formula E racing directly shape the next generation of consumer EVs. Key areas of progress include:

  • Battery management software: Enhances performance and longevity.
  • Intelligent power solutions: Optimises energy use for real-world driving.
  • Energy efficiency: Advances regenerative braking systems to extend range.

The real-world testing ground allows manufacturers like Jaguar, Porsche, McLaren and Nissan to refine road-relevant technologies under extreme conditions.

A platform for global brand exposure

Formula E is a global stage for manufacturers to showcase their EV expertise and sustainability efforts. Competing in this series aligns brands with eco-conscious values, helping them appeal to a growing market of environmentally aware consumers. The visibility and credibility gained bolster a brand's reputation as a leader in the electrification movement.

Pioneering sustainability practices

The Gen4 Formula E cars aim to bring significant power upgrades compared to their predecessors:

  1. Power output: The Gen4 cars will have a power output 600kW, which translates to just over 800 bhp. It is a substantial increase from the current Gen3 cars, which produce around 469 bhp.
  2. Acceleration: Gen4 cars are expected to reach 100 km/h in less than two seconds. It is faster than the current Gen3 cars, which achieve 0-100 km/h in around two seconds.
  3. Regenerative braking: The Gen4 cars will have a 700kW recuperation capacity, a significant improvement in energy regeneration capabilities.
  4. Battery capacity: The Gen4 battery developed by Podium AT will have a capacity of 55kW, 16.5kW more than the current battery.
  5. Race duration: Due to the increased battery capacity, Gen4 cars are expected to enable longer races, potentially lasting up to 1 hour and 15 minutes, compared to the current 45-50 minute races.

The power advancements in Gen4 cars are expected to narrow the performance gap between Formula E and Formula 1, potentially making Formula E even more competitive and exciting for fans and drivers alike.

Driving research and development

The competitive nature of Formula E pushes manufacturers to explore groundbreaking technologies. Key advancements include:

  • Inverter design: Crucial for converting battery power into motor energy, Formula E's innovations enhance efficiency in consumer EVs.
  • Regenerative braking: Racing developments improve energy recovery systems, which is vital for extending EV range.
  • Software innovation: Sophisticated algorithms for battery management and power delivery directly inform production models.

Real-world data enhancements

Teams collect extensive data during races—sometimes over 3TB per event. The data is analysed to fine-tune vehicle performance and drive innovation. For instance:

  • Jaguar Land Rover: Improved torque management lessons learned from the track, adding 20km of range to its I-PACE.
  • Nissan: Applied battery advancements to achieve better range and performance in its consumer models.

Sustaining market relevance

As the automotive industry shifts toward electrification, Formula E enables brands to remain competitive by demonstrating their EV capabilities. The exposure reinforces their commitment to sustainable mobility and establishes their expertise in the evolving market.

Formula E's high-performance nature validates the reliability and potential of EV technology. Manufacturers prove that their EVs can withstand the rigours of racing while delivering exceptional performance, translating this credibility to consumer vehicles.

Using Formula E as a 'mobile laboratory', manufacturers continuously refine EV technologies, accelerating the journey toward efficient, sustainable and robust EVs for the mass market. As Jeff aptly states, Formula E is about more than just racing—it's about shaping the future of mobility.
