Formula E Season 11: Rules, Points and Penalties Explained

Reigning world champion Pascal Wehrlein, who drives for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, is unsurprisingly primed and ready for Formula E 2024/25 to kick-off.
"The new Porsche 99X Electric is a very cool car, " he says. "I love the colours so much that I designed my helmet similarly.
"It also goes without saying that I am proud now to have number 1 on the nose of my car. I want to defend my title and the preparations for the new season are going according to plan."
Championship structure
Formula E features two championships: the Drivers' World Championship and the Teams' World Championship.
- Drivers' title: Awarded to the driver with the most points at the end of the season.
- Teams' title: Determined by the combined points of both drivers in each team throughout the season.
If a tie occurs, rankings are determined by the number of race wins, followed by second-place finishes, third-place finishes and so on. If ties remain unresolved, the FIA selects the winner based on its criteria.
Points system
The top 10 race finishers are awarded points using the standard FIA scoring format. Additional points include:
- Pole position: 3 points.
- Fastest lap: 1 point (if the driver finishes in the top 10).
In unusual circumstances, such as weather disruptions, points may be adjusted:
- Less than 2 laps completed: No points.
- Between 2 laps and 75% race distance: Half points.
- Over 75% race distance: Full points.
Penalties and sanctions
Maintaining discipline is essential in Formula E, with penalties for collisions, track infractions, or technical breaches. Penalties include:
Time penalties: Five-second or 10-second penalties are served during pit stops or added to race times if no pit stop occurs.
Drive-through penalties: Drivers must enter and exit the pit lane without stopping.
Stop-and-go penalties: Requires a pit stop with a 10-second stationary period before rejoining the race.
Drivers failing to serve penalties due to race retirement may face grid penalties in future races. Severe infractions can result in disqualifications, race suspensions or licence penalties.
e-Licence requirements
- Completion of FIA training in electric safety and Formula E technical knowledge.
- Accumulation of at least 20 FIA points over three years, or prior Super Licence qualification.
- Participation in previous Formula E events or demonstrate exceptional talent in single-seater racing.
Reigning champions, such as Pascal Wehrlein, automatically qualify for the next season's Super Licence.
Tyre regulations
Formula E uses Hankook 18-inch all-weather tyres, which are identical and highly regulated.
Drivers are allocated:
- Four new front and rear tyres per race.
- Six new front and rear tyres for double-header events.
Modifications, pre-heating or chemical treatments to tyres are strictly prohibited.
