GM Aids Recovery Efforts for California Wildfire Victims
In response to the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, General Motors (GM) has announced various initiatives to assist affected employees, customers and local communities.
These measures aim to provide immediate relief and long-term support as the region recovers from the disaster.
Targeted support for employees and customers
Duncan Aldred, Vice President of Global Commercial Growth Strategies and Operations at GM, highlights the company’s commitment.
"GM is extending targeted local support to our customers and employees who have been impacted by the California wildfires," he says. "We’re finding ways to help get people back on the road and using our resources to make a difference in the recovery in the weeks and months to come.”
Among GM’s support initiatives is deployment of mobile EV charging stations to assist those who have lost access to their regular charging facilities. From February 1 through April, GM will introduce several mobile charging solutions across the Los Angeles metro area:
- GM HYDROTEC mobile charging units: The units are powered by renewable hydrogen and can fast-charge two EVs simultaneously. Currently, in a pilot phase, the HYDROTEC chargers reflect GM’s ongoing efforts to commercialise hydrogen energy technology.
- Yoshi Mobility Charging Trailers: Developed by Nashville-based Yoshi Mobility and partly funded by GM Ventures, these propane-powered trailers can fast-charge two EVs simultaneously.
- InCharge Energy Mobile charging station: The solution includes five DC fast chargers powered by a combination of battery energy storage systems and biodiesel generators.
More details about these stations will be shared as they become operational.
Philanthropic and employee support
In addition to technical support, GM is spearheading philanthropic efforts to help affected communities.
- Employee giving campaigns: Contributions will benefit organisations such as the American Red Cross Los Angeles region and the California Fire Foundation.
- Educational support: GM plans to donate charitable funds to nonprofits addressing immediate and long-term educational needs in impacted areas.
- Vehicle donations: GM provides vehicles to the Red Cross to aid relief efforts.
OnStar assistance and financial relief
Elsewhere, GM has activated its OnStar Crisis Assist Services for customers with OnStar-equipped vehicles.
The complimentary service offers information about the wildfires, routing guidance and access to emergency assistance from OnStar advisors, ensuring drivers have access to the support they need.
To further ease the burden on affected customers, GM is offering a range of financial relief options:
- Assistance toward purchasing or leasing new GM vehicles for those whose vehicles were damaged or destroyed in the wildfires (subject to qualifications and restrictions).
- Deferred payment options for impacted customers (subject to certain terms).
- Coverage of collision repair deductible costs for GM vehicles damaged in the wildfires (subject to qualifications).
What's more, GM prioritises parts shipments to wildfire-affected areas to ensure timely repairs and minimise disruptions for customers and service providers.
GM’s multi-faceted response to the California wildfires reflects its dedication to supporting employees, customers and communities in times of crisis.
Through innovative solutions like mobile charging stations, philanthropic contributions and financial relief programmes, GM is working to make a meaningful impact on recovery.
