How ChargePoint is Tackling EV Charger Vandalism
ChargePoint, a leading innovator in EV charging solutions, has unveiled two groundbreaking initiatives designed to tackle one of the EV industry's persistent challenges: charger vandalism.
The company is setting a benchmark for charging station security and reliability with a new cut-resistant charging cable and an advanced alarm system called ChargePoint Protect.
Transforming cable security
In an industry-first move, ChargePoint has introduced a cut-resistant charging cable to prevent cable theft and vandalism.
Leveraging more than 15 years of experience in product innovation, ChargePoint has developed the cable with advanced materials that significantly increase resistance to cutting while maintaining the flexibility and ease of use that drivers expect.
The novel design addresses a critical concern for EV drivers and charging station owners, ensuring that cables remain intact and operational despite attempted tampering. The solution aims to enhance customer satisfaction and reduce maintenance costs, making charging stations more dependable.
ChargePoint's cut-resistant cables will be rolled out across its commercial and fleet charging stations. Additionally, the company plans to license the technology to other charging station manufacturers by mid-2025.
It represents a collaborative approach that aims to elevate the standard for cable security across the entire EV charging industry.
"Our cut-resistant cable design can make any charging station more resilient and dependable for all EV drivers."
Introducing ChargePoint Protect
In addition to the cut-resistant cable, ChargePoint has launched ChargePoint Protect, an innovative alarm system that integrates seamlessly with the company's charging infrastructure. ChargePoint Protect detects cable tampering in real time and activates an alarm designed to deter vandals by utilising existing speakers, screens and lighting systems within the chargers.
The system not only alerts potential offenders but also notifies station owners via SMS or email if the alarm is triggered. This ensures a faster response from the owners or law enforcement, increasing station security.
ChargePoint Protect is a free software upgrade for select charging station models, making it an accessible and cost-effective solution for existing customers.
Rick Wilmer, CEO at ChargePoint, highlights the company's commitment to addressing vandalism head-on: "ChargePoint Protect and our cut-resistant cables demonstrate our relentless dedication to offering a dependable charging network. We do not view ourselves as victims of vandalism, but rather responsible for solving it for our customers and the industry."
A combined approach to security and reliability
By integrating these two solutions, ChargePoint aims to significantly benefit both station owners and EV drivers. Station owners can expect reduced repair and replacement costs associated with vandalism, while drivers will experience enhanced reliability, knowing that charging stations are more secure and dependable.
The launch is part of ChargePoint's broader mission to eliminate barriers to EV adoption. The company is fostering greater trust in public charging infrastructure by addressing critical pain points like vandalism, a key factor in accelerating the transition to electric mobility.
With the cut-resistant cables available for licensing by mid-2025 and ChargePoint Protect rolling out this month, the company is taking decisive steps to combat charger vandalism. The solutions highlight ChargePoint's role as a pioneer in EV charging innovation, committed to enhancing the charging experience for all stakeholders.
As the EV market grows, ChargePoint's proactive measures ensure that infrastructure reliability and security keep pace with demand. The bold approach reinforces the company's position as a trusted partner in the global transition to sustainable transportation.
