UK Power Networks and Falco Construction trial all-electric diggers to cut emissions, reduce noise and improve sustainability in urban maintenance projects

UK Power Networks (UKPN), a major electricity distributor in the UK, has partnered with Falco Construction to trial fully electric diggers for network maintenance. The innovative initiative aims to decarbonise construction activities while maintaining efficiency and reliability.

The City of London is experiencing significant construction activity, with over 9 million square feet of floor space currently under construction. The substantial development suggests a high demand for construction equipment, including diggers.

In April 2023, 1,365 Non-Road Mobile Machinery (NRMM) units were actively operating in London, with 1,163 compliant with the NRMM Low Emission Zone requirements.

While this figure covers all of London and various types of machinery, it indicates the scale of equipment usage in the city's construction sector.

The trial features the Takeuchi TB20e, an all-electric excavator deployed to work on UKPN's underground assets.

If successful, the model could replace Falco Construction's fleet of 120 diesel diggers, drastically reducing emissions. In addition to its environmental benefits, the TB20e is reported to be 75% quieter than its diesel counterpart, making it ideal for use in urban areas such as London, the South East and the East areas of the UK.

Alan Seyfi, Support Services Director at Falco Construction

Alan Seyfi, Support Services Director at Falco Construction, noted that the Takeuchi model is the first electric excavator to deliver performance comparable to diesel-powered machines, stating, "The trial has put to bed concerns about range anxiety, power issues and handling."

According to reports, the electric diggers can operate on a single charge for three to five days, further easing operational concerns.

Cleaner air for the UK's capital

London's Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Mete Coban

London's deputy mayor for environment and energy, Mete Coban, highlighted the significance of decarbonising construction equipment, stating:

"We know that construction vehicles such as diggers contribute significantly to air pollution, which is why the Mayor has tightened standards across London.

"Technology like this will help ensure Londoners, particularly those in the most deprived areas, can breathe cleaner air."

UKPN has highlighted the positive feedback from the trial, describing it as a significant step forward for construction and utility operations in the capital and beyond.

"The results have cemented the trial as a way forward," the company stated, pointing to the broader implications of adopting zero-emission technology.

Challenges and Future Considerations

Despite their potential, electric solutions face limitations for high-power or heavy vehicles due to the size and weight of the required batteries. The challenge is evident in the effort to decarbonise heavy goods transportation, where infrastructure for EV trucks remains limited.

Currently, the UK has just one dedicated EV charging location for heavy trucks, but the high upfront cost of vehicle acquisition and depot charging infrastructure remains prohibitive.

A step towards a greener future

The trial of zero-emission electric diggers by UKPN and Falco Construction represents a meaningful step towards decarbonising construction and utility operations.

With promising results and strong support from policymakers and industry leaders, the initiative demonstrates the potential of all-electric solutions to contribute to cleaner, quieter and more sustainable urban environments.
