Overview of subscription-based services for EVs

As the automotive industry accelerates towards an electric future, subscription-based services for EVs are becoming increasingly prevalent. The services provide a range of benefits that enhance the ownership experience, improve convenience, and offer new revenue streams for automakers and service providers.

From charging solutions to advanced connectivity features, here's a comprehensive look at the subscription-based services available for EV owners.

Charging services

One of the primary concerns for EV owners is charging infrastructure. Subscription-based charging services address this by offering access to extensive networks of public charging stations.

Companies like ChargePoint and Electrify America provide membership plans that include discounted rates, priority access, and even mobile apps for locating and reserving charging stations. Additionally, home charging solutions, including installing and maintaining home chargers, are often available through subscription plans.

These services ensure EV owners have reliable and convenient access to charging at home and on the go.

Advanced navigation and route planning

EV-specific navigation and route planning services are essential for optimising travel. Subscriptions to services like Tesla's Premium Connectivity offer real-time navigation updates, including charging station locations, charger availability, and optimal routes based on current charge levels.

The advanced navigation systems help alleviate range anxiety by ensuring that drivers can easily find and access charging stations during their journeys. Additionally, these services often provide traffic updates and rerouting options to avoid congestion, making travel more efficient.

Remote vehicle management

Modern EVs come equipped with a host of connected features accessible through mobile apps. Subscription-based remote vehicle management services allow owners to monitor and control their vehicles remotely.

Features such as remote start/stop, climate control, battery monitoring, and charging status updates provide convenience and peace of mind. For instance, the MyBMW app offers these functionalities, enabling owners to pre-condition their car's interior on hot or cold days or check the battery status before a trip.

Driver Assistance and Safety

Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are transforming vehicle safety and driving convenience. Subscription services offer enhanced ADAS features such as lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automated parking. For example, Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) subscription provides access to the latest autonomous driving technologies. Additionally, emergency assistance services, including roadside assistance and automatic emergency calls in case of an accident, are often bundled with these subscriptions, ensuring driver safety at all times.

In-vehicle entertainment and connectivity

To keep drivers and passengers entertained, many automakers offer subscription-based in-vehicle entertainment and connectivity services. These include access to streaming services like Netflix, Spotify, and Apple Music directly from the car's infotainment system.

Furthermore, in-car Wi-Fi subscriptions provide internet access for passengers, turning the vehicle into a mobile hotspot. General Motors' OnStar, for instance, offers connectivity packages that include these entertainment options, enhancing the overall driving experience.

Personalisation and upgrades

Subscription services also extend to vehicle personalisation and software upgrades. Over-the-air (OTA) updates allow automakers to deliver new features, performance improvements, and bug fixes directly to the vehicle.

Tesla is a pioneer in this area, frequently rolling out new capabilities through OTA updates. Personalised driving profiles, which remember settings for different drivers, can also be managed through subscription services, ensuring a customised driving experience every time.

Fleet management

For businesses, subscription-based fleet management services offer real-time tracking, vehicle health monitoring, and data analytics. Platforms like Geotab provide fleet managers with insights into driving patterns, vehicle efficiency, and maintenance needs. These services help optimise fleet operations, reduce costs, and improve overall efficiency.

Charging station reservations

Finding an available charging station can take time and effort in crowded urban areas or along busy travel routes. Subscription-based reservation services allow EV owners to book charging slots in advance, ensuring availability when needed. This feature is handy for long-distance travellers and those living in areas with high EV adoption rates.
