Featuring 12 fast chargers, IONITY & Charlestown Shopping Centre's vast HPC site – the largest in Ireland – paves the way for sustainable EV travel

Ireland has taken a significant step toward its goal of having 40% EVs by 2030 with the opening of the largest EV High-Power Charging (HPC) station at Charlestown Shopping Centre in Dublin.

The project, a collaboration between Charlestown Shopping Centre and IONITY, highlights the growing importance of EV infrastructure in creating a sustainable future for the country.

IONITY supports using renewable energy, ensuring emission-free and carbon-neutral driving. As of May 2024, the IONITY HPC network spans 24 European countries, with 600 charging stations and over 3,700 charging points. The extensive network ensures EV charging is accessible every 60-80 miles along Europe's highways.

Enhancing customer experience at Charlestown

IONITY, known for developing Europe's largest open-brand high-power charging network, has installed 12 award-winning 350 kW EV chargers at the site.

Strategically located just two minutes from Junction 5 of the M50, Ireland's busiest motorway, the station ensures fast and reliable charging for drivers on the go.

With charging from 10% to 80% taking less than 20 minutes, EV owners can easily resume their journeys or enjoy the amenities of the 188,000-square-foot shopping centre.

Dan O'Connor, Centre Manager at Charlestown Shopping Centre, highlights the partnership's role in supporting Ireland's transition to sustainability.

"With the installation of these 12 IONITY Fast Chargers, we are proud to offer the largest EV charging hub in Ireland," he says. "The initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and enhancing the shopping experience for our customers."

Andreas Atkins, Country Manager for UK & Ireland at IONITY, adds: "The installation of such an impressive charging site at Charlestown Shopping Centre should be a sign to others that EV charging is affordable, attainable and beneficial."

Ireland's sustainability efforts are evident in its EV infrastructure and broader initiatives, such as the world's first carbon-neutral convention centre—the Convention Centre Dublin—and Europe's most sustainable hotel, the Iveagh Garden Hotel.

With ambitious sustainability targets and the rapid rollout of EV infrastructure, the collaboration between IONITY and Charlestown Shopping Centre further showcases how private and public sectors can work together to create a cleaner, greener future for all.
