Amazon's 2024 Sustainability Report highlights the deployment of 10,000+ electric delivery vans, advancing its commitment to net-zero carbon emissions

Amazon's 2024 Sustainability Report marks a significant milestone in the company's journey toward a greener future. The report focuses on the transformative role of EVs in its logistics and delivery operations.

This extensive shift is pivotal to Amazon's broader commitment to The Climate Pledge, an ambitious goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon

Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon: “Our transportation network is one of the most challenging areas of our business to decarbonise, and to achieve net-zero carbon will require a substantial and sustained investment”

Deployment of electric delivery vans

One of the most notable achievements detailed in the report is the deployment of over 11,000 custom electric delivery vans from Rivian in its 2023 fleet, specifically designed to meet Amazon's unique logistical needs.

The fleet has since expanded to 15,000 in the US.

The vehicles are operational across North America and Europe.

The custom design features a robust battery system that provides a range sufficient to handle extensive delivery routes, ensuring the vans can complete their daily schedules on a single charge. Efficiency is crucial in maintaining Amazon's promise of speedy deliveries while reducing emissions.

The sustainability report provides an employee perspective, "Driving the new electric vans is not only a great experience but also a step towards a greener future. It's rewarding to be part of this sustainability mission."

Advanced features and safety

Amazon's electric delivery vans are not just about reducing carbon footprints; they are equipped with advanced safety and driver assistance systems. These features include collision detection, lane-keeping assist, and automated emergency braking, which protect drivers and enhance public safety.

Charging infrastructure

The expansion of the EV fleet necessitates a parallel development of a robust charging infrastructure. Amazon has made substantial investments in this area, installing thousands of charging stations at its delivery hubs.

The infrastructure ensures that the growing fleet of EVs can be efficiently charged and ready for daily operations.

Furthermore, Amazon has partnered with renewable energy providers to source the electricity for these charging stations from clean, sustainable resources.

Cost efficiency

Beyond environmental benefits, the switch to EVs is proving cost-effective. EVs have lower operating and maintenance costs than their diesel or gasoline counterparts.

This cost efficiency is critical to Amazon's strategy, enabling the company to maintain competitive pricing while adhering to its sustainability goals.

Industry collaboration and advocacy

Amazon's commitment to electric vehicles extends beyond its operations. The company actively advocates for the broader adoption of EVs within the logistics and transportation industry.

By sharing best practices and collaborating with other companies, Amazon aims to create a ripple effect that accelerates the transition to electric mobility.

Additionally, Amazon is working with policymakers to develop favourable conditions for EV infrastructure development, such as incentives for EV purchases and investments in public charging networks.

Community and stakeholder engagement

Amazon is conducting educational campaigns to inform the public about the benefits of EVs and sustainable practices. By fostering a culture of sustainability, Amazon is encouraging broader societal changes that support its environmental objectives.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, Amazon plans to continue expanding its EV fleet, aiming to integrate 100,000 Rivian electric delivery vans by 2030.

RJ Scaringe, CEO of Rivian states "Coming together is one of our values as a company and as we’ve worked to get the electric delivery vans on the road, it’s been one of the best parts of the journey.

"Our teams were incredibly aligned, from the earliest whiteboard sketch, that we weren’t simply making an electric van, but rather, we were creating a product that was optimised for drivers."

The company is exploring other electric transport solutions, such as electric cargo bikes and drones, to enhance its sustainability efforts further.
