The China-backed, Swedish EV business, Polestar is delivering more electric vehicles to the US and reached a major production milestone in August 2023

Data from the Department of Energy suggests that many of the United States are yet to accelerate their transition to all-electric vehicles (EVs).

Figures from July 2023 show that, unsurprisingly, California is leading the way as it exceeds well over 900,000 EV registrations, with other states trailing behind. Namely, the remaining states in the top five were:

  • Florida - 167,990
  • Texas - 149,000
  • Washington - 104,050
  • New Jersey - 87,030

The US is also home to great potential for EV transformation as seen by China with attempts by BYD to penetrate the country’s automotive sector, but this pure-play manufacturer isn’t the only one. Polestar is now owned by the Chinese corporation Geely Motors, suggesting that China now has some time before US electrification.

Polestar owns a dealership in the capital, not far from the White House, and is able to support the state’s transition to zero-emission vehicles. The sale of nearly 10,000 Polestar-branded vehicles into the country makes it the top china-owned exporter of electric cars in the states.

The Polestar EV brand shifts from premium to minimalist luxury

On the 23rd August 2023, Polestar reached a major milestone in EV production as the 150,000th Polestar 2 rolled off its production line. On that day, the company’s CEO, Thomas Ingenlath, said: “The upgraded Polestar 2 is the best version to date. With improved software, better quality, longer range and faster charging, it is the basis from which we continue to grow our business.”

Created under the Volvo business, which is also owned by Geely Motors, the Polestar brand seems to be undergoing an intrinsic transformation from a premium to a luxury brand with ties to the boatmaker Candela and an electric motorcycle business Kindred Spirits. Staying true to its roots, the company supports these businesses as home-grown Swedish companies that are doing their to electrify vehicles, but also provide unique experiences that put all-electric propulsion in front of the consumer. Understanding the importance of collaboration, Polestar is now the battery charging system provider for Candela, which is not only delivering electric boats, but bringing light to new ideas that limit the impact of leisure and mobility.

The company shares with its a love of minimalism design and production, which is also carried in its design language and also sparked collaboration with the Kindred Spirits brand, CAKE—all-electric motorcycles with minimal design.

Polestar sees its vehicles as more than simply mechanisms for decarbonisation. The transition to more sustainable solutions is certainly of utmost importance, but the company has already achieved a certain premium air to its vehicle designs and functions. Enabling this is some of the most advanced technologies, which are likely to be shared between it and parent company Volvo as both brands look to create safer, more sophisticated EVs that will also comply with the demand for autonomy.

The latest Polestar 2 rendition highlights all of the key aspects of its vehicle delivery, including 100% vegan materials that provide lightweight durability and premium quality finishings, and its latest smart technology updates for improved over-the-air updates and better digital visibility of the road ahead, and also the switch to rear-wheel drivetrain.
