Nissan Reinvents the R32 GT-R as an Electric Icon
Nissan has unveiled a bold vision for the future of electrified performance, revealing a one-off R32 EV conversion at the 2025 Tokyo Auto Salon.
The passion project, spearheaded by a small, innovative team of Nissan engineers, blends the legacy of the iconic R32 GT-R with cutting-edge EV technology.
Ryozo Hiraku, a long-time Nissan EV powertrain engineer and former R32 Skyline owner, is leading the project.
"I wondered if 30 years from now — in 2055 or beyond — owners of this incredible machine could still buy gasoline and enjoy driving it," he said. "I saw merit in using electrical and digital technology to replicate the appeal of the R32 GT-R so future generations could experience it."
Staying true to the R32 GT-R spirit
At first glance, the R32 EV remains nearly indistinguishable from the original. Finished in the classic Gun Grey Metallic, its unassuming exterior conceals a state-of-the-art electric powertrain.
Under the hood, the team replaced the revered 2.6-liter twin-turbo RB26DETT engine with two 160kW electric motors, delivering up to 340 Nm of torque each. The motors are powered by a 62kWh battery sourced from the LEAF NISMO RC02, located where the rear seat once resided.
Despite the added 370 kg weight of the EV components, the team meticulously tuned the vehicle to match the original R32 GT-R's torque-to-weight ratio.
"Our goal is not to exceed the original but to honour its dynamic performance," Ryozo explained.
Electrifying performance and advanced AWD
Recreating the driving dynamics of the original R32 GT-R was no small feat. The team sought to replicate its impressive all-wheel drive performance, enabled by Nissan's ATTESA E-TS system.
Unlike its predecessor's mechanical components, the R32 EV employs modern sensors and twin electric motors for faster and more precise torque distribution. The results in superior traction and stability across various driving conditions, echoing the original's dynamic prowess.
To ensure optimal handling, the R32 EV features a NISMO sports suspension system equipped with Öhlins dampers, minimising body roll and accommodating the vehicle's added weight.
Sensory engagement in the digital age
While many EVs prioritise silence, the R32 EV preserves the sensory engagement of its gasoline-powered counterpart. A cabin speaker replicates the distinctive sound of the RB26DETT engine and the paddle-shift functionality mimics the tactile experience of gear shifts through simulated "shift shock."
The brakes were upgraded with larger rotors and monoblock callipers from the R35 GT-R, providing enhanced stopping power. Custom 18-inch wheels, reminiscent of the R32's original alloys, accommodate the new braking system.
The team retained much of the original aesthetic while modernising key elements. Custom Recaro seats, high-resolution digital gauges, and updated infotainment screens maintain the R32 GT-R's nostalgic charm while enhancing functionality.
A collaborative journey
The project benefited from the insights of Nissan master test driver Hiroyoshi Kato, who originally fine-tuned the R32 GT-R in the 1980s. Hiroyoshi's feedback has been instrumental in refining the EV's performance.
Despite no immediate plans for commercialisation or conversion kits, the R32 EV is more than a one-off experiment. The project showcases Nissan's dedication to preserving automotive heritage while exploring sustainable innovations.
Ryozo reflected: "This isn't just about electrifying a car—it's about ensuring the spirit of the R32 GT-R continues to inspire future generations."
This ambitious initiative highlights Nissan's commitment to blending legacy and innovation, paving the way for a future where iconic performance vehicles can thrive in an electrified era.
