ABB’s Oliver Johnson discusses ABB's Formula E partnership and how the company is revolutionising commercial electrification testing

ABB is a leader in electrification and is working towards building a resource-efficient future. The company is an official partner of Formula E, which not only brings its technical expertise to the pits, but it takes away lessons in charging and mobility infrastructure that can be applied at home, on business premises, and across cities to decarbonise transport.

We caught up with Antti Matinlauri, Product Group Manager Traction Motors, IEC LV Motors Division at ABB, and Oliver Johnson, E-Mobility Lead UK, to find out more about electrification in motorsport.

Antti shared how reducing the battery size of a public transport vehicle—along with other commercial vehicles in mining and shipping—minimises the footprint of vehicles. Acting on this strategy requires innovation in charging and a power grid system across cities to minimise disruption.

“From buses to boats, there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes to not only develop electric transport solutions, but to create a digital ecosystem, resulting in a fleet approach to mobility in and around cities,” Antti said.

Oliver discussed the popularity of electric vehicles.

“The demand for electric vehicles is much higher than what the supply can keep up with,” he said. “If you look at overall carbon emissions on the roads, we really need to start tackling the heavy goods vehicles, the transportation which is keeping the country moving - not just look at EVs.”

ABB’s electric vehicle technology and connectivity

Electric vehicle technology is developing year-on-year, uniting vehicles with their owners and the rest of their technology and keeping EV drivers safe and entertained on the road for longer. ABB recently featured in our ‘Top 10: EV Tech Companies’. ABB was chosen for supporting EV drivers on the go or at home with its various products, such as its single and multi charging units, for homes, workplaces and retail.
