Strategic partnership

In addition to their ongoing discussions, Nissan and Honda have signed a new MOU to expand their collaboration framework.

By design, the agreement explores and defines specific areas where both companies can work together to achieve shared goals.

By pooling their resources and expertise, Nissan and Honda aim to advance their research and development efforts in critical technologies that will shape the future of EVs and SDVs.

Joint research on next-generation SDV platform

A key focus of the partnership is developing the next-generation SDV platform. The platform is crucial to the future of intelligent vehicles, encompassing technologies such as autonomous driving, connectivity and AI.

Nissan and Honda have begun joint research on these fundamental technologies to complete primary research within a year.

Depending on the results, the companies will consider moving towards mass production.

Honda

Battery technology

Batteries are a cornerstone of EV development and Nissan and Honda are exploring ways to collaborate on this critical component.

The partnership will consider short- and long-term cooperation, including sharing specifications and mutual supply of batteries.

By combining battery technologies, the companies aim to offer a wide range of options, from high-output to cost-effective models, while achieving cost reductions through shared investments and risk management.

As part of the collaboration, Nissan and Honda have agreed to standardise the specifications of their battery cell modules for EVs. The agreement will enable the batteries they procure to be used interchangeably in vehicles from both manufacturers.

Additionally, the companies are studying the possibility of Nissan sourcing lithium-ion batteries from L-H Battery Company, a joint venture between Honda and LG Energy Solution, for use in North America after 2028.

Shared development of e-Axles

Another area of cooperation is developing e-Axles, a key component in EVs.

Nissan and Honda have agreed to standardise the specifications of their e-Axles over the medium to long term, with an initial focus on sharing motors and inverters.

The collaboration aims to enhance the efficiency and performance of next-generation EVs produced by both companies.

Mutual vehicle complementation

Nissan and Honda are also exploring opportunities for mutual vehicle complementation.

This includes the possibility of each company supplementing the other's model line-up in different regions and markets. Both internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and EVs are under consideration for this complementation.

The companies have agreed on which models and areas to focus on and have established a joint product review system to guide this collaboration.

Nissan and Honda team up

Energy services and resource circulation in Japan

In addition to vehicle development, Nissan and Honda are exploring potential cooperation in Japan's energy services and resource circulation.

This would include areas such as charging infrastructure, energy equipment and battery-powered services.

By working together, the companies aim to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of energy use in the EV ecosystem.

Looking ahead: synergies and innovation

The partnership between Nissan and Honda represents a significant step towards realising a carbon-neutral and traffic-accident-free society.

By combining their technological expertise and resources, the companies are well-positioned to lead the industry in developing next-generation SDVs and EVs.

As they continue to explore new areas of cooperation, Nissan and Honda are committed to delivering innovative solutions that meet the demands of the future automotive landscape.
