BYD overtakes Tesla as top EV Manufacturer
BYD secures the top spot in ABI Research's EV ranking, surpassing Tesla with its innovative strategies and broad range of models

Analysis by ABI Research, a leading global technology intelligence firm, has revealed a significant EV market shift.

BYD, a Chinese automaker, has claimed top spot as the leading EV Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM), surpassing Tesla.

ABI's comprehensive evaluation assessed the offerings of 18 OEMs across multiple criteria, reflecting the dynamic nature of the EV industry.

The leaders and the contenders

The competitive assessment by ABI Research categorises the 18 OEMs into three groups based on performance:

  • Market Leaders: BYD, Tesla
  • Mainstream Players: GAC Aion, General Motors, Hyundai-Kia, Stellantis, Volkswagen, XPENG, ZEEKR
  • Followers: BMW, Ford, Honda, Mercedes-Benz, NIO, Nissan, Renault, Toyota, Volvo

The ranking showcases the varied responses and strategies of different automakers as they navigate the rapidly-evolving EV landscape.

ABI Research used nine criteria that were divided into innovation and implementation capabilities.

They included factors such as battery technology, platform design, coverage of various vehicle segments and the electrified share of total sales.

BYD and Tesla emerged as the leaders, standing out thanks to their innovative approaches and effective implementation of EV technologies.

Dylan Khoo, an Industry Analyst at ABI Research

Dylan Khoo, an Industry Analyst at ABI Research, states: "The EV market is rapidly growing and is the future of the automotive industry.

OEMs have had widely differing responses to the EV transition, viewing it as an opportunity or a challenge. This disparity is evident in their varying innovation and implementation capabilities."

BYD's rise to the top

While Tesla has long been a dominant force in the EV market, BYD's recent surge highlights its rapid growth and strategic advantages.

Tesla scored exceptionally well in vehicle range, platform innovation and fast charging capabilities, but BYD's ascent was down to its superior vertical integration and a broader range of models available across different vehicle segments.

BYD's performance is a testament to its comprehensive approach to EV manufacturing, which includes internal control of more aspects of the production process. The vertical integration has enabled BYD to achieve greater efficiency, cost-effectiveness and scalability, giving it an edge over competitors.

The changing landscape of the automotive industry

The assessment by ABI Research highlights the current state of transition in the automotive industry.

Newcomers in the EV space, particularly electric-only brands from China like ZEEKR, XPENG and GAC Aion, are demonstrating strong innovation performance. They are often a generation ahead of many established "legacy OEMs," which are still adjusting to the challenges posed by electrification.

"The automotive industry is in a state of transition," Khoo adds. "This assessment demonstrates the varying capabilities of OEMs as they navigate this period of change.

"Some legacy brands must now look to technology solutions providers to enhance their capabilities and maintain their position as the industry moves toward electrification."

Insights are drawn from ABI Research's 'Electric Vehicle OEMs Competitive Ranking' report, part of the company's broader EVs research service.
