Velocicharge expands fast charging network in Puerto Rico
Velocicharge announces its third phase of expansion, adding new EV charging stations and upgrading existing sites across Puerto Rico until mid-2026

As part of its commitment to advancing the future of mobility, Velocicharge, a leader in fast-charging infrastructure for EVs, has announced its third phase of expansion in Puerto Rico.

This phase, beginning in October 2024 and extending through mid-2026, will see new stations and upgrades to existing facilities, further establishing Velocicharge as a pioneer in the vehicle electrification sector.

Expanding charging infrastructure

Velocicharge's expansion plan includes installing new fast charging stations in key locations across Puerto Rico. The new stations will be located at Plaza Cayey, Plaza Fajardo, Plaza Isabela and the Marriott Courtyard in Aguadilla, ensuring increased convenience for EV users.

Additionally, the company plans to upgrade its existing stations at The Shops at Caguas (formerly Catalinas Mall), Plaza Río Hondo in Bayamón, Plaza Las Americas and The Outlets 66, enhancing the number of fast chargers available.

The additions will join Velocicharge's existing network at other shopping centres such as Plaza Céntrico in Guayama, Plaza del Caribe in Ponce and Plaza del Norte in Hatillo.

The company's journey in establishing its fast-charging infrastructure began in 2021 with its first network setup in Canóvanas.

Driving Puerto Rico's EV adoption

Founded in 2021, Velocicharge has rapidly become the leading operator of fast charging stations in Puerto Rico.

Its goal is to accelerate the adoption of EVs by providing a reliable, convenient and straightforward charging network throughout the island.

Its efforts have catered to residential and commercial EV users and influenced industrial sectors, fostering a shift toward cleaner and more sustainable energy.

Federal support: NEVI program funding

Velocicharge's development has primarily been driven by private investment, but its new expansion phase will benefit from federal support through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) Formula Program.

The funding will enable the establishment of new stations in Yauco and San Juan, including a significant new installation at Yauco Plaza and enhancements at The Outlets at Montehiedra.

Carlos Vizcarrondo, CEO of Velocicharge,

Carlos Vizcarrondo, CEO of Velocicharge, stated: "With this expansion, Velocicharge will bring ultra-fast charging capabilities with power levels up to 180 kW, available 24 hours a day, providing a highly efficient charging experience."

"This support not only facilitates the transition to electric mobility but also reinforces our commitment to clean technologies and reducing our carbon footprint."

Commitment to sustainability and environmental impact

Since its inception, Velocicharge has focused on reducing the environmental impact of transportation in Puerto Rico. As of April 2024, the company has reduced CO2 emissions by 411,855 pounds, equivalent to approximately 205 tons.

The reduction is attributed to its strategic use of solar systems in several shopping centres, generating clean energy to minimise its carbon footprint further.

"We are dedicated to transforming Puerto Rico into a leader in electric mobility in the Caribbean," stated Carlos. "This expansion allows us to lead the way in providing cleaner transportation solutions and helping companies transition to electrification."

Juan Alvarado, Marketing Director at Velocicharge

Juan Alvarado, Marketing Director at Velocicharge, noted:  "These collaborations are crucial in encouraging the growth of electric vehicle use and expanding our charging network"

"By working with industry leaders, we accelerate the transition toward clean, efficient mobility."

Technological innovations and customer trust

Velocicharge's focus on technology is evident in its user-friendly mobile application, which offers real-time updates on charging information, availability and alerts. The app includes features like AutoCharge and AutoPay, streamlining the charging process and enhancing user convenience. "We constantly update our app to ensure customer convenience and satisfaction," said Alvarado.

Building consumer trust is central to Velocicharge's strategy, especially in an industry that demands reliability and transparency. "We proactively plan, build and manage our network to ensure optimal charger performance," explained Carlos. "In 2023, we achieved a 99.7% operational rate, exceeding the federal recommendation, thanks to our comprehensive maintenance strategies."

Puerto Rico's electric mobility

Velocicharge remains at the forefront of the EV revolution in Puerto Rico. It is committed to expanding its infrastructure, enhancing technological solutions and maintaining a focus on sustainability. With continued investments and strategic partnerships, the company aims to shape a future where electric mobility is the norm, not the exception.
