Currys Chooses Ohme as Official Smart EV Charger Partner
Currys, the UK’s largest electrical retailer, has named Ohme as its new EV charger partner.
Ohme, founded in 2017, has become a key player in the world of electric vehicle (EV) charging. Its smart charging solutions allow consumers and businesses to reduce costs by charging during off-peak times, all while lessening their environmental impact.
Recognised as a ‘gigacorn’, Ohme has the potential to remove one gigatonne of CO2 from the atmosphere each year.
The partnership marks a significant step as Currys will soon begin selling Ohme's award-winning EV chargers, both online and in-store, across 50 of its flagship locations. For Currys, which has long been a leader in helping customers embrace cutting-edge technology, this collaboration is the perfect way to tap into the rapidly growing EV market.
Why Ohme’s smart charging makes a difference
At the heart of this partnership is Ohme's advanced smart charging technology.
All Ohme chargers can connect with the national grid in real time, automatically adjusting their charging times to take advantage of the lowest electricity prices. For the average UK driver travelling 6,800 miles per year, using a smart off-peak tariff like Intelligent Octopus Go at 7p/kWh, the annual charging cost for an electric vehicle would be £127.50 (approx. US$166.93).
In contrast, charging at the Standard Variable Tariff of 24.5p/kWh would cost £416 (approx. US$544.66) and driving the same distance in a petrol car would cost more than £1,100 (approx. US$1,440.20).
Ohme’s smart charging technology not only saves money but also plays a key role in the UK's efforts to reduce carbon emissions by shifting energy usage to greener, off-peak hours.
“EV sales in the UK have risen by over 10% this year, so partnering with Ohme chargers felt like a natural fit," comments Zoe Lucid, Senior Buyer at Currys.
"The company's reputation for innovation and exceptional customer service aligns perfectly with our commitment to offering customers sustainable, tech-forward solutions.”
A shared commitment to sustainability
Both Ohme and Currys are deeply committed to sustainability. Ohme is already the official charger provider for major automotive brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai and Volvo Cars in the UK, as well as housing developers like Harron Homes and Hollins Homes.
The company has also passed industry-standard certifications for quality processes (ISO 9001) and information security (ISO 27001), further solidifying its reputation as a trusted provider.
Currys, for its part, has an ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. The retailer is focused on extending the life of technology through repair, reuse and recycling, while offering energy-saving products to help customers reduce waste and lower their environmental footprint.
David Watson, CEO of Ohme, adds "As the UK's largest electrical retailer, Currys is the perfect partner to help us bring our smart EV charging solutions to more people.
"This collaboration opens up a new retail channel for us, ensuring that no driver is left behind in the shift to e-mobility.”
The partnership between Currys and Ohme represents a shared vision for a more sustainable future. By making smart EV charging more accessible to a wider audience, they are helping UK drivers reduce their environmental impact and embrace the benefits of electric vehicles.
With EV sales on the rise, this collaboration couldn’t come at a better time.
Customers shopping at Currys will now have the opportunity to invest in smarter, greener and more cost-effective EV charging solutions - ensuring that as more people make the switch to electric vehicles, they can do so in the most efficient and sustainable way possible.
