Sustainability in elite sport: Formula E attends COP28

Elite sports must commit to sustainability; addressing climate change is a shared, constant responsibility, says Julia Pallé, VP Sustainability, Formula E

Formula E, the world’s first all-electric motor racing series, has been certified net zero carbon since inception in 2011. The sustainable offering in the motorsport space is a stark comparison to other offerings in the space — Formula 1 produced approximately 80,000 tons of CO2 in 2023, a 15% increase compared to the last year's calendar. Whilst the increase can somewhat be attributed to the additional two races in the competition, a double figure emissions increase is not in line with the shift towards sustainable sport that the 2019 Formula 1 Sustainability Strategy promised.

The Vice President of Sustainability for Formula E is sustainability expert Julia Pallé, who specialises in sustainability in motorsport and the international elite sport industry. While developing and implementing the sustainability strategy at Formula E, Pallé has overseen a number of significant achievements that establishes Formula E’s credentials as a leader of sustainability in elite sport.

Pallé is also Sustainability Advisor for Extreme E, the all-electric SUVs series, bringing electric racing to some of the most remote corners of the planet to highlight the climate change challenges faced by different ecosystems.

Formula E at COP28

As Formula E attends COP28 to support the global elite sport space in embracing sustainability, she provides expert insight to EV Magazine:

“Formula E is thrilled to be a part of COP28 and continue our tradition of leading discussions and advocating for tangible action on sustainability.

“We know that sport is ideally placed to drive transformation, and we take pride in leading the charge for faster and widespread adoption of more sustainable lifestyles and technological solutions.

“As the world's most sustainable sport and the first to achieve net-zero carbon status from the start, we not only set high standards for ourselves, but also endeavour to inspire and encourage others. Notably by aligning CO2 emissions with science-based targets to reduce our footprint by 45% by 2030.

“Our mission to promote the widespread adoption of electric vehicles by showcasing sustainable mobility in the most iconic cities remains unwavering.

“It's time for elite sports to unite in their commitment to sustainability; addressing climate change is a shared and constant responsibility that we cannot shy away from. Join us in our journey towards a more sustainable future at COP28 and beyond.”
