SUN Mobility & IndianOil partner to shake up battery swapping EV charging offering convenience, cost-efficiency & environmental benefits for urban drivers

As EVs gain momentum, one persistent issue is the adequacy of charging infrastructure. The need for efficient charging solutions is crucial to support widespread EV adoption. Battery-swapping services have emerged as a promising solution to address the shortfall, allowing users to exchange depleted batteries for fully charged ones quickly and conveniently.

Despite advancements in charging technology, many urban EV owners face significant challenges. Finding a convenient and fast way to recharge remains problematic for those needing easy home charger access. The issue has revived interest in EV battery-swapping services, which offer a practical alternative to traditional charging methods.

Convenience and cost benefits

Battery-swapping offers several advantages, notably convenience and cost-effectiveness. For urban residents and fleet operators, the process of simply swapping their batteries at designated stations can be a game-changer. It eliminates the need for long charging times, providing a quick turnaround for their vehicles.

Moreover, battery swapping can significantly reduce the initial cost of owning an EV. Instead of purchasing a vehicle with an expensive battery pack, customers can buy the vehicle body and lease the Battery separately. This approach can lower the upfront cost of an EV by thousands of dollars, making electric mobility more accessible and affordable to a broader audience.

Environmental and grid benefits

The environmental benefits of battery swapping are significant. Swapping systems typically charge batteries slower, extending battery life and reducing electronic waste. Additionally, these systems can charge batteries during off-peak hours, helping to balance energy demand.

Battery-swapping stations can even act as 'virtual power plants,' sending energy back to the grid during peak periods, thereby supporting grid stability and sustainability.

SUN Mobility and IndianOil collaboration

The collaboration between SUN Mobility and IndianOil is a game-changer in the battery-swapping landscape. SUN Mobility, a leader in energy infrastructure and services for EVs, has joined forces with IndianOil to create a vast battery-swapping network across India. The unique partnership aims to establish one of the largest battery-swapping infrastructures globally by 2030, revolutionising the EV charging experience.

IndianOil will use its extensive network of more than 37,000 fuel stations to deploy SUN Mobility's advanced battery-swapping technology.

The initiative will make battery-swapping as accessible as conventional fuel stations, streamlining the EV experience for users. By offering Battery as a Service (BaaS), the venture will address battery cost, maintenance, replacement, and charging time concerns.

Scaling up the infrastructure

The joint venture between SUN Mobility and IndianOil is not just a partnership, but a commitment to the future of EV charging.

Currently, there are approximately 2,500 battery swap stations in India, primarily serving electric two-wheelers (2Ws) and three-wheelers (3Ws). These stations have supported vehicles travelling a cumulative 1.7 billion e-km. The plan is to scale this number up to more 10,000 stations across more than 40 cities within the next three years. These ambitious expansion aims to promote the seamless adoption of electric mobility for 2Ws, 3Ws and small four-wheelers, providing a convenient BaaS mobility solution.

SUN Mobility already supports more than 25,000 EVs across 20 cities in India, using more than 630 stations and more than 50,000 smart batteries. These systems facilitate over a million monthly battery swaps, serving a wide range of 2W and 3W customers.
