Shell: EV solutions driving efficient, sustainable fleets
As our series exploring Shell's Fleet Electrification report continues, EV Magazine looks at the expanding opportunity for fleet operators to transition

This is the forth instalment in Shell's series Fleet Electrification: Electric buses have been pivotal in reducing emissions and improving air quality in cities worldwide. However, they come with unique challenges, such as the need for advanced charging solutions.

In Brussels, SBRS GmbH — a member of the Shell Group — pioneered a bespoke eDepot solution along the city’s 64-bus route.

This project included:

  • Installing charge points with varying wattages.
  • Integrating a fast-charging point at a central passenger stop.
  • Customising infrastructure to accommodate roof-mounted connection ports on electric buses.

One particularly innovative solution involved situating power equipment underground to preserve pedestrian zones and avoid encroaching on tarmac space.

As Shell explains: "This unique set-up means bus users would never know [the infrastructure] was there."

Such tailored solutions highlight the expertise required for electrifying both bus and truck fleets. They highlight the potential for EV infrastructure to integrate seamlessly into dense urban environments.

Shell’s megawatt charger: A versatile charging solution

A critical development for fleet electrification is the Shell Megawatt Charger, designed to serve electric buses, trucks and even ferries equipped with 1MWh batteries. Capable of delivering a full charge in just two hours, the technology exemplifies the scalability and flexibility needed for diverse fleet operations.

As Shell notes, the charger is a testament to how road and marine transport businesses can adopt efficient, compatible solutions to accelerate their decarbonisation efforts.

Maintaining operational efficiency for fleet operators

For fleet operators, the transition to EVs hinges on ensuring reliability and efficiency. Take, for instance, a logistics business running heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs) on short-haul routes.

To maintain operational efficiency, the following key elements must be addressed:
  • High-quality DC charge point hardware: Reliable infrastructure for consistent performance.
  • Charge point management software: Tools for optimizing charging schedules and energy use.
  • Power supply systems: Robust solutions to handle peak energy demands.
  • Renewable energy integration: Sourcing 100% certified renewable energy to align with decarbonisation goals.
  • Integrated payment systems: Simplified payment processes for drivers and fleet managers.
  • Ongoing support and maintenance: Ensuring long-term system reliability.

By building tailored eDepot solutions and leveraging a reliable public charging network, fleet managers can optimise EV operations, manage costs and ensure seamless integration into daily workflows.

The path forward

Fleet electrification presents immense opportunities for reducing carbon emissions and driving sustainable growth. From urban transport systems to logistics fleets, solutions like Shell’s Megawatt Charger and eDepot innovations illustrate how tailored approaches can overcome challenges and unlock the potential of electric mobility.

As Shell continues its exploration of eMobility, one thing is clear: operational efficiency and environmental responsibility go hand in hand in shaping the future of transport.
