Monta and GridBeyond: EV Charing with Grid Stability

Monta, a Danish platform transforming the EV charging ecosystem and global smart energy company GridBeyond have successfully registered the first 2,000 EV assets into the UK’s Static Firm Frequency Response (SFFR). This milestone marks a significant advancement in stabilising the national power grid.
EV charging as a grid-stabilising force
Through a strategic partnership, Monta and GridBeyond are deploying charge points as demand-side assets in SFFR programmes using Monta’s innovative PowerBank feature. PowerBank is an intelligent energy management tool that detects grid imbalances and momentarily pauses EV charging to prevent power outages.
By connecting thousands of charge points to the grid, Monta plays a crucial role in alleviating stress caused by fluctuating electricity production and consumption. Charge point owners contribute to grid stability and earn Monta Wallet credits as a reward, making it a win-win solution for individuals and businesses.
Addressing urban energy demands
With EV charging stations often concentrated in high-density urban areas, electricity demand can spike, straining local grids and impacting both EV charging availability and general power supply.
Monta’s PowerBank solution addresses the challenge by integrating charge points into the grid as flexible energy assets, ensuring more stable and efficient electricity distribution.
Alex Iriondo, Grid Services Product Manager at Monta, highlighted the significance of the innovation: “PowerBank is a game-changer for alleviating pressure on the electrical grid. As EV adoption grows, we must build a resilient, sustainable infrastructure that ensures accessibility and stability.”
The partnership illustrates Monta’s commitment to smart energy management, turning EV charge points into active grid supporters rather than just power consumers.
A collaborative approach to energy stability
The collaboration between Monta and GridBeyond is a testament to the growing role of EV infrastructure in the broader energy sector. By seamlessly integrating Monta’s smart charging solution with GridBeyond’s Virtual Power Plant (VPP) platform, the initiative ensures effective control and market access for charge points.
Michael Kent, Head of EV Solutions at GridBeyond, highlighted the impact of the integration: “Monta’s solution manages the charging schedules of individual charge points, seamlessly integrating with our VPP platform for control and market access.
"GridBeyond provides market access and manages interactions with National Grid. The management of these first 2,000 EV charge points is a significant milestone for the market, showcasing the positive impact of EVs in balancing the grid.”
Strengthening grid resilience
During periods of grid imbalance — whether caused by sudden power dips or surges in demand — smart EV charging plays a critical role in stabilising the system. Monta’s PowerBank allows charge point operators to actively support the grid while benefiting financially, reinforcing the EV sector’s role in energy management.
Alex adds: “With Monta’s PowerBank, charge point operators can actively support the grid while benefiting financially. Every charging station participating in this programme prevents blackouts and improves grid resilience, making the EV sector a key ally in energy management.”
Scaling for the future
The partnership aims to expand to register 1,500 EV charge points imminently. The growth aims to demonstrate that EV charging infrastructure can be a stabilising force rather than a burden on the grid.
Alex concluded, “We believe strong partnerships, like this one with GridBeyond, are essential for the transition to a smarter, cleaner energy system. As we continue to scale, we aim to register thousands more EV charge points, proving that EV charging infrastructure can be a stabilising force rather than a burden on the grid.
“This partnership, which is set to see a further 1,500 registrations in the next few weeks, is a step toward ensuring that EV adoption does not compromise energy reliability but instead enhances it.
"EV charge points are more than just plug-in stations; they are critical energy assets helping to shape a more efficient, stable and sustainable grid.”
The Monta-GridBeyond collaboration highlights the evolving synergy between EV infrastructure and the energy sector. As more charge points participate in grid-balancing programmes, the benefits will extend beyond EV users, fostering a more resilient, cost-effective and sustainable power network for all.Alex summarised the relationship:
