Monta and Electricity Maps team up
Monta and Electricity Maps team up to cut EV charging emissions by 4.5x using advanced data-driven technology for cleaner, greener charging sessions

The EV charging platform Monta and climate-tech startup Electricity Maps have joined forces to reduce the carbon impact of EV charging significantly.

Significant Carbon Savings

Data collected over the last 12 months from Monta SmartCharge app users shows that nearly 70,000 SmartCharge sessions were optimised for cleaner, greener charging.

Each session avoided an average of 203g of CO2, compared to just 37g for regular price-optimised sessions—a 4.5x reduction in CO2 impact per charge.

How Does It Work?

Most SmartCharge sessions are traditionally price-sensitive, prioritising charging when prices are low, often overnight, which can result in higher CO2 emissions.

Through this strategic partnership, Monta SmartCharge app users can now charge their EVs not only when energy is cheapest but when the carbon intensity of electricity is lower and more energy comes from sustainable sources.

Monta receives detailed carbon intensity data from Electricity Maps via a standardised API. The data informs the SmartCharge algorithm to:

  1. Charge when CO2 emissions are lowest.
  2. Charge when electricity is primarily from renewable sources.

By integrating this carbon intensity data, Monta combines price and emissions reduction variables, unlike most other Smart Charging algorithms that only consider price.

Enhanced user Ppreferences

Alok Dubey, Regional Director, Strategic Sales - West at Monta, explains, "We entered this partnership to enhance EV charging with a focus on reducing carbon emissions.”

“Users can set their SmartCharge preferences based on what is most important—CO2 intensity, charging from renewable energy, or price. Our SmartCharge algorithm then determines the optimal, bespoke charging schedule."

The need for greener charging

EV owners who charge directly from the national electricity grid often need more control over the source of their electricity, making it challenging to regulate emissions from charging.

The more EV owners choose greener, cleaner charging options, the better for the planet and the lower global carbon emissions. Monta aims to increase the number of SmartCharge users, optimising their charges in this eco-friendly way.

In the first quarter of 2024, the number of people choosing cleaner charging increased by 48%, reflecting strong consumer demand for greener EV charging solutions.

A cleaner future

Olivier Corradi, CEO and Founder of Electricity Maps

"Electricity Maps is proud to partner with Monta to drive a cleaner future for transportation. By providing forecasted carbon intensity data to their SmartCharge algorithm, we empower EV drivers to make informed decisions that significantly reduce their emissions," states Olivier Corradi, CEO and Founder of Electricity Maps.

The partnership exemplifies how data-driven solutions can lead to substantial environmental benefits. Using real-time carbon intensity data, Monta enables users to charge their EVs with cleaner electricity, contributing significantly to the global green energy transition.

Join the movement towards greener EV charging and reduce your carbon impact today with Monta and Electricity Maps.
