The Visionary Journey of Thomas Ingenlath
Thomas Ingenlath is renowned for his visionary leadership and innovative contributions, particularly at Polestar. Born in Germany, his journey to becoming the CEO of Polestar results from a series of significant achievements and transformative roles in some of the world's leading automotive companies. For instance, his design of the Volkswagen Concept R and the second-generation Volkswagen Sharan showcased his ability to balance aesthetics and functionality.
Early life and education
Thomas studied industrial design at the Fachhochschule für Gestaltung in Pforzheim, one of Germany's premier design schools. Thomas further honed his skills with a Master's in Vehicle Design from the Royal College of Art in London. His education laid a robust foundation for a career that would make him one of the most influential design leaders in the automotive sector.
Early career
Thomas's professional journey began at Audi in the early 1990s, where he worked as an exterior designer. His time at Audi shaped his design philosophy, emphasising the balance between aesthetics and functionality. Following Audi, Thomas moved to Volkswagen, where he contributed to various high-profile projects. His notable work includes the design of the Volkswagen Concept R and the second-generation Volkswagen Sharan.
Skoda and the shift to leadership
In 2000, Thomas embarked on a new chapter in his career as the Head of Design at Skoda, a Volkswagen Group brand. His tenure at Skoda was marked by a series of transformative changes, where he redefined the brand's image by infusing modern and dynamic design elements into its lineup. His work on the Skoda Octavia and Superb models was particularly impactful, earning widespread acclaim and significantly boosting the brand's market perception.
Volvo and the transformation
His career took a pivotal turn in 2012 when he was appointed Senior Vice President of Design at Volvo Cars. At Volvo, Thomas was responsible for the brand's dramatic design overhaul, which became a cornerstone of Volvo's resurgence in the global market. His leadership and design direction were instrumental in this transformation, as he introduced a new design language characterised by minimalist Scandinavian aesthetics, luxurious interiors and innovative safety features. Under his guidance, Volvo introduced a series of critically acclaimed models, including the Volvo XC90, S90, and V90.
He played a vital role in shifting the brand's identity towards sustainability and aligning it with the evolving trends in the automotive industry.
Polestar: A new era
In 2017, Thomas was appointed CEO of Polestar, a performance electric car brand jointly owned by Volvo Car Group and its parent company, Geely. Under his leadership, Polestar, originally the performance division of Volvo, was rebranded to focus exclusively on EVs. The significant shift in his career from design to executive leadership demonstrated his versatility and vision. His strategic decision to reposition Polestar as an EV brand was a bold move that has since been validated by the success of Polestar 1 and 2.
Thomas's leadership at Polestar has been described as disruptive. Thomas's response: "We didn't start asking how we could be the disruptor; we asked how a modern car company could work beyond technical innovation. If what we are doing means disrupting the industry, then fair enough, but it was never our intention."
Thomas led the launch of the Polestar 1, a plug-in hybrid luxury sports coupe, and the Polestar 2, the company's first fully electric vehicle. The Polestar 2, in particular, has been praised for its design, performance, and technological innovation, establishing Polestar as a serious contender in the EV market. Emphasising the need for sustainable practices in the automotive industry, Ingenlath states, "Rethinking our modes of operation to minimise our footprint is fundamentally changing the prerequisites of us doing business." This approach underscores Polestar's commitment to integrating innovative solutions that reduce the environmental impact throughout a vehicle's lifecycle
Vision and prospects
Thomas is not just a CEO but a thought leader in sustainable mobility. Under his guidance, Polestar has committed to ambitious sustainability goals, including producing a completely climate-neutral car by 2030. Emphasising the importance of tangible results, Ingenlath notes, "People don't buy an idea, they buy a product that delivers on that."
His vision extends beyond vehicles to encompass the entire lifecycle of automotive production, from sustainable material sourcing to ethical manufacturing processes and end-of-life recycling.
His leadership style is characterised by a blend of creativity, strategic thinking, and an unwavering focus on sustainability. The unique combination has positioned Polestar as a forward-thinking brand in the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.
Thomas' career is a testament to the power of visionary leadership and innovative thinking. From his early days as a designer at Audi and Volkswagen to his transformative roles at Skoda and Volvo, and now as the CEO of Polestar, Thomas has consistently pushed the boundaries of automotive design and sustainability. His journey reflects a commitment to shaping the future of EVs.
