Introducing automated vehicles is an exciting opportunity to continue to evolve vehicle technology & increase road safety, says Alexandra Wyard, Allianz

Allianz Holdings plc is the non-regulated holding company which owns the principal insurance operations of Allianz SE in Great Britain including Allianz Insurance.

As one of the world's leading insurers and asset managers, The Allianz Group has more than 122 million private and corporate customers in more than 70 countries.

Alongside a broad range of personal and corporate insurance services — including property, life and health insurance, assistance services, credit insurance and global business insurance — Allianz is one of the world’s largest investors, managing around US$765bn on behalf of its insurance customers.

Additionally, its asset managers PIMCO and Allianz Global Investors manage about US$1.8tn of third-party assets.

In the sustainable technologies world, the firm offers Allianz My Electric Car Insurance, a package tailored to the specific needs of EV drivers and their cars, as well as a UK employee EV salary sacrifice scheme.

As governments around the world continue to examine how autonomous vehicles fit into the future of road infrastructure, safety for citizens and around other road users, Allianz shares insight.

Allianz shares insight on Automated Vehicles Bill

“Allianz welcomes the announcement in the King’s Speech that automated vehicles will be addressed as part of the Automated Vehicles Bill,” says Alexandra Wyard, Director of Underwriting at Allianz Personal.

Wyard has been at Allianz since July 2022, having previously headed up motor underwriting for insurance giant LV and Direct Line Group. Alongside her directorial role at Allianz, Wyard is Chair of the new ABI Electric Vehicle Motor Working Group and a regular conference panellist — including at both the Conservative and Labour Party Conferences 2023, where she took the opportunity to host events and discuss what the future of automated vehicles and UK roads should look like.

“Introducing automated vehicles in the UK will provide an exciting opportunity to continue the evolution of vehicle technology, which in turn will help increase road safety for all users. However, it’s essential that the right legislation is in place to ensure its successful and safe adoption and why we’re urging the Government to introduce this Bill as soon as possible.

“As part of this, it’s vital the legislation addresses data access. Swift delivery of unbiased information following an incident is crucial to insurers, law enforcement and the road users they work on behalf of. We believe this should be held independently and made available to relevant parties where appropriate. Ultimately, how data is accessed and used needs to be open and transparent, and drivers need to feel confident with how their data is being managed.

“Given the significant changes ahead with the introduction of automated vehicles on the UK’s roads, it is essential that there is a joined-up and collaborative approach across all levels of Government and the different sectors involved.”
