Advancing EV Battery Management - LG Energy Solution & ADI

LG Energy Solutions & ADI sign MoU
LG Energy Solution partners with ADI to enhance EV battery management with advanced temperature measurement and impedance technology for better performance

Effective battery management in EVs ensures that the battery operates optimally in all conditions, prolonging its lifespan, maintaining performance, and ensuring safety. Advanced Battery Management System (BMS) technology is integral to modern EVs, making them reliable, efficient, and safe for long-term use. Essentially the battery of an EV dictates its efficiency, so this technology helps maximise an EV's range and overall efficiency.

LG Energy Solution: A Leader in Battery Technology

LG Energy Solution, a spin-off from LG Chem, is a leading global manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries for EVs, mobility, IT, and energy storage systems. With 30 years of experience in revolutionary battery technology and extensive research and development (R&D), the company holds the top position in battery-related patents globally, boasting over 58,000 patents.

Its robust global network spans North America, Europe, and Asia, including battery manufacturing facilities established through joint ventures with major automakers. Committed to building a sustainable battery ecosystem, LG Energy Solution aims to achieve carbon neutrality across its value chain by 2050, promoting shared growth and a diverse and inclusive corporate culture.

Partnership with Analog Devices, Inc.

LG Energy Solution recently announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Analog Devices, Inc. (ADI), a global semiconductor leader, to enhance the competitiveness of its Battery Management Total Solution (BMTS).

Through this two-year joint effort, ADI will supply high-performance battery management integrated circuits (BMICs), and the companies will co-develop algorithms to precisely measure the internal temperatures of EV battery cells, paving the way for advanced fast-charging technologies.

Roger Keen, General Manager of Battery Management at ADI, states, "ADI's electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technology is a leader in the industry for in-application use of this insightful measurement for battery management applications. Our joint effort with LG Energy Solution furthers ADI's contribution to the energy transition. We are enthusiastic about continuing to work together to bring state-of-the-art and efficient batteries to the market and further advance the clean energy ecosystem."

The Role of Impedance Measurement

ADI, known for its focus on sustainable energy, offers a broad product portfolio including advanced technologies in impedance measurement. In electrical science, impedance is defined as the opposition of an electrical component to alternating current and voltage in a circuit. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) is a technology that measures impedance at different frequencies.

ADI's EIS solutions, utilising first-in-the-market BMICs, accurately measure impedance at controlled frequencies. As impedance varies based on the battery's state, age and temperature, its precise measurement allows for a deep understanding and diagnosis of its internal conditions.

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, LG Energy Solution envisions a future where its accumulated battery manufacturing and BMS capabilities are seamlessly integrated with ADI's advanced impedance measurement technology. This integration will not only enhance our BMTS but also deliver additional customer value.
