Gender equality at first all-electric FIA World Championship
Next season’s FIA ‘Girls on Track’ programme at the Formula E races will include a role on the race winner’s podium, for the very first time.
Uniting electric vehicle innovation with gender equality
While racing is traditionally a male-majority sport, an effort is being made on and off the track to include more women in the sport and encourage girls to get involved. Yet lack of sponsors for women is a significant barrier - but one that may be about to fall.
The world’s first all-electric FIA World Championship, which is also certified net zero carbon, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, will see the ‘Girls on Track’ programme (for girls aged 12 to 18) extend to all 11 race weekends in 2024, up from five race weekends previously.
Now in its sixth year, Formula E has supported 2,500 girls at 15 race weekends. The updated programme will include:
- To highlight female inclusion in motorsport, there will be a participant of FIA Girls on Track invited to the victory podium after each race.
- The offer of a work experience placement from ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, during race week.
- Resources on the Formula E website covering the necessary skills and career development opportunities across motorsport.
Formula E: ‘Educate, upskill and integrate’ the next generation of female leaders
Julia Palle, Vice President Sustainability at Formula E, said she was thrilled to take FIA Girls on Track to the next level and set the standard for how sporting organisations can educate, upskill and integrate the next generation of female leaders into their workforce.
“Taking bold, innovative steps is in our DNA and our commitment for furthering gender equality is no different,” said Palle. “Looking around the paddock we see more and more women who have benefitted from the programme and progressed into the industry which underlines both the effectiveness of the programme as well as the importance of why we must continue to maximise its potential. We, like all other sports, must go further, faster, in championing gender equality around the world.”
"I am delighted to see the FIA Girls on Track programme back for the milestone tenth season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship,” said Deborah Mayer, FIA Women in Motorsport Commission President. “The FIA Women in Motorsport Commission is firmly committed to increasing female participation in motor sport at all levels and in all domains. As such, FIA Girls on Track offers the perfect platform to introduce young girls and women to motorsport and all the many and varied career opportunities it presents."
