After a US$150m investment from the US State Department, Zipline is tripling its life-saving delivery network across Africa with electric drones

The US government is investing up to US$150m in Zipline International to expand its African network, a major backing of electric autonomous vehicle technology for logistics. The move could triple the American robotics company's drone delivery reach on the continent.

This highlights how automated, battery-powered transport is solving infrastructure challenges, much like the electric vehicle (EV) sector is reshaping transport.

Zipline already serves more than 5,000 health facilities and this new agreement will broaden its African services, proving the value of electric drone delivery in healthcare.

Expanding electric and autonomous logistics

The partnership aims to triple served health facilities to 15,000, giving 130 million people access to medical supplies.

Through a pay-for-performance model, the US State Department will commit up to US$150m to help African governments implement Zipline’s 24/7 delivery infrastructure. African nations are expected to contribute up to US$400m in fees. Funding is unlocked as governments sign contracts and commit to long-term payment.

“We started Zipline to build a logistics system that serves all people equally. Today the US government is doubling down on our work, and using our AI, robotics and autonomous logistics system to improve health outcomes,” says Keller Rinaudo Cliffton, CEO and Co-Founder of Zipline.

“For years, presidents and prime ministers have told me they want the best of what America has to offer: innovation, jobs and 21st-century technology to leapfrog into the future. That has always been America’s value proposition and today, the State Department is making that happen.”

The impact of sustainable delivery models

Zipline's electric drones deliver products at high speed, reducing risks like spoilage and slow service. Since 2016, Zipline has completed 1.8 million autonomous deliveries with no safety incidents.

The impact of this on-demand electric delivery system is profound. Research shows it has helped save tens of thousands of lives and cut maternal deaths in supported health facilities by up to 56%.

Further data shows:

  • Stockouts of medicine and vaccines are cut by 60% in areas Zipline serves
  • Immunisation rates have risen by 13-37 percentage points
  • Delivery times have been reduced from an average of 13 days to under 30 minutes

“African governments are choosing to invest their own resources in Zipline because it works, and it’s incredible value for money. It solves intractable global health challenges like maternal mortality, malnutrition, and under five mortality,” explains Caitlin Burton, CEO of Zipline’s Africa business.

“This award marks a key moment in foreign aid: the US government is backing Africa’s vision, building the infrastructure Africa wants, and accelerating the adoption of American innovation that’s proven to work and recognised as one of the most cost-effective public health interventions ever studied. It will forever change the trajectory of human health and development in Africa.”

Fostering innovation and economic growth

This investment in Zipline’s electric autonomous logistics network could extend fast, efficient services to billions more people. The financing will support new, locally staffed Zipline hubs, which is expected to foster economic growth by creating skilled jobs within the communities served.

“Rwanda and Zipline have been working together for years to harness technology for the good of our people. We have witnessed the extraordinary impact of drone delivery: saving time, saving money, and saving lives,” adds Minister Paula Ingabire, Minister of ICT and Innovation, Government of Rwanda.

“With this partnership, we will now expand to urban delivery, bringing these benefits to even more communities. We thank the US Government for supporting Zipline’s expansion and for joining us in building the foundation for Africa’s future in healthcare and innovation.”

This joint support advances Zipline’s capabilities, placing electric autonomous logistics at the centre of healthcare innovation.
