Stellantis welcomes the European Commission's announcements on the automotive industry's future, praising flexibility in CO2 targets and support for innova

Stellantis, one of the world's leading automakers, has strongly supported the European Commission's recent announcements regarding the future of the European automotive industry. Its positive response follows the second meeting of the Strategic Dialogue on the future of the European Automotive Industry, led by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

The Strategic Dialogue, which began in early 2025, brings together 22 key players in the automotive sector to address pressing issues facing the industry.

Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz and president of the European Autobobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA)

As Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz and president of the European Autobobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), stated, "The European automotive industry remains fully committed and financially invested in transitioning toward zero-emission mobility.

However, the only way to ensure the success of this transition is to make it a market-driven and demand-led transformation".

Stellantis particularly commended the commitment and pragmatism demonstrated by participating Commissioners and Executive Vice Presidents, singling out Executive Vice President Stéphane Séjourné and Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas for their contributions to the process.

The acknowledgement highlights the collaborative nature of the dialogue and the importance of strong leadership in navigating the complex challenges facing the automotive sector.

Innovation is at the forefront of Stellantis' strategy, which focuses on software and autonomous driving. Its recent partnership with Mistral AI exemplifies its commitment to cutting-edge technology. As reported, Stellantis and Mistral AI are developing an advanced in-car assistant designed to provide real-time, conversational support for drivers.

The AI-powered system will function as a voice-enabled user manual, allowing customers to ask questions and receive immediate guidance through natural interactions.

Stellantis and the broader industry have welcomed the flexibility introduced regarding CO2 targets with an extended compliance period. As ACEA points out, the adjustment is seen as a crucial step towards preserving the sector's competitiveness while maintaining commitment to electrification and environmental targets.

Sigrid de Vries, Director General of ACEA

Sigrid de Vries, Director General of ACEA, highlighted, "The solutions that are on the table for light-duty vehicles are flexibilities and not a U-turn in the decarbonisation policy. There is no turning back on the transition – more than US$269bn in investments by vehicle makers into zero-emission technologies are the best testament to it".

Stellantis stressed the importance of quickly passing the proposed targeted amendment. It believes that the initiative, combined with additional support measures such as targeted purchase and fiscal incentives, cheaper green energy and investment in charging infrastructure, could significantly accelerate the transition to electrification.

Stellantis praised the Commission's commitment to exploring direct support for EU battery producers. Stellantis recognises the critical importance of building European champions in key sectors such as electric batteries, semiconductors, AI and data.

Securing access to essential raw materials is seen as fundamental to establishing a strong, competitive and independent European automotive industry.

Looking ahead, Stellantis views the recent discussions as an important milestone in shaping the future of the European automotive sector. It expressed its eagerness to continue the constructive dialogue in the coming weeks and months.

A key focus will be exploring ways to provide customers greater freedom in choosing from various product options while simultaneously pursuing the green transition.

As the automotive industry faces unprecedented challenges and opportunities, the Strategic Dialogue represents a crucial platform for collaboration between policymakers and industry leaders.

The outcomes of these discussions, including the forthcoming action plan scheduled for presentation on March 5, 2025, are expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring the European automotive sector remains competitive and resilient in the global market.

Stellantis' positive response to the Commission's announcements reflects the industry's broader commitment to innovation, sustainability and adaptability in the face of rapidly evolving market conditions and regulatory landscapes. As the sector transitions towards zero-emission mobility, the ongoing dialogue between industry stakeholders and European institutions will be essential in shaping a sustainable and competitive future for the European automotive industry.
