Teleoperated EV Carsharing Arrives in Detroit's Corktown

A pioneering collaboration between Sway Mobility and Mapless AI has launched the Corktown Carshare pilot, a teleoperated EV carsharing initiative designed to provide Detroit's Corktown neighbourhood with a cost-effective and environmentally-friendly transportation alternative.
The pilot, supported by the State of Michigan Office of Future Mobility and Electrification (OFME), the Detroit Transportation Innovation Zone (TIZ) and NextEnergy, aims to demonstrate the viability of teleoperated carsharing while collecting data to inform future expansions.
Bringing remote driving to carsharing
The initiative leverages Mapless AI's advanced remote driving technology, which enables EVs to be driven remotely to high-demand locations throughout Corktown.
It eliminates the need for large car fleets stationed at fixed locations, reducing congestion and optimising vehicle availability.
Philipp Robbel, CEO and co-founder of Mapless AI, states: "Mapless AI's cutting-edge remote driving technology is transforming the way we think about shared mobility, making carsharing more seamless, accessible and cost-effective.
"By teaming up with Sway Mobility to launch Corktown Carshare, we are offering Detroit residents an affordable alternative to car ownership while showcasing how teleoperated EV fleets, powered by our unique safety-first technology, can transform urban transportation."
How Corktown Carshare works
The Corktown Carshare programme allows residents to summon an EV to a designated location via a mobile app. A Mapless AI operator then remotely drives the vehicle to the requested pick-up point.
At the end of the rental, the vehicle is teleoperated to a charging station to recharge overnight. The programme currently utilises existing charging infrastructure, with plans to expand by installing additional charging depots as the initiative scales.
Michael Peters, CEO & Co-Founder of Sway Mobility, adds: "Most car owners only drive their cars a few hours a week, which means many of us spend a lot of money for our cars to sit idle in a parking space or garage.
"Expanding access to affordable, sustainable mobility options by providing carshare-as-a-service will enable more peopleāparticularly those who cannot or do not want to own a private carāto get around town easily and cost-effectively."
Addressing transportation barriers in Detroit
Many Detroit residents face transportation challenges, including limited access to reliable transit options and difficulty reaching grocery stores, medical appointments and workplaces.
Car ownership costs can exceed US$12,000 annually, making it unaffordable for many. Traditional carsharing services often struggle with deployment logistics and parking constraints.
Teleoperated carsharing solves these issues by requiring fewer vehicles to serve more users.
Tony Geara, Deputy Chief of Mobility Innovation, City of Detroit, says: "As the birthplace of the global automotive industry, Detroit has long been an epicentre of mobility innovation.
"Corktown Carshare represents one key way that our city continues its leadership in pioneering new solutions for critical transportation and mobility challenges."
Advancing Michigan's mobility leadership
The Corktown Carshare initiative highlights Michigan's commitment to sustainable transportation and emerging mobility technologies.
The programme aligns with the state's vision of positioning itself as a leader in next-generation mobility solutions.
Justine Johnson, Michigan's Chief Mobility Officer, highlights: "The Corktown Carshare programme exemplifies Michigan's leadership in pioneering innovative, sustainable mobility solutions that directly benefit our communities.
"By leveraging remote driving technology to expand access to EV carsharing, this initiative demonstrates how mobility technology companies can 'Make it in Michigan.'"
A model for future urban mobility
The Corktown Carshare pilot sets a precedent for the future of urban mobility, showing how teleoperated EV carsharing can be implemented in cities nationwide.
Jim Saber, CEO of NextEnergy, continues: "At NextEnergy, we are committed to accelerating clean and accessible mobility solutions that enhance the quality of life for communities.
"The Corktown Carshare programme is an exciting demonstration of how technology and innovation can work together to create more sustainable and affordable transportation options."
With its innovative approach, Corktown Carshare has the potential to reshape urban transportation management, making cities greener, more efficient and more accessible for all residents.
