Maritime Transport Expands High-Powered EV Charging

Maritime Transport Ltd, one of the UK's multimodal logistics providers, has reached a significant milestone in its decarbonisation strategy. It has commenced the installation of high-powered EV chargers at its Felixstowe site, signalling the beginning of a widespread infrastructure rollout across its network.
John Williams, Group Managing Director at Maritime Transport, highlighted the significance of this initiative: "This milestone marks the start of a much larger rollout and by the time full installation is complete in Q2 2025, we'll have high-powered charging across 12 Maritime sites, including rail terminals and strategic port locations, enabling simultaneous charging for 98 BEVs from 100kWh all the way up to 1MW (...eventually)!!"
Commitment to net-zero and industry transformation
Maritime's ambitious project aligns with the UK's goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The logistics giant's investment in EV infrastructure highlights its commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and addressing the critical challenge of decarbonising the heavy goods vehicle (HGV) sector. Given that HGVs contribute significantly to transport emissions, such efforts are pivotal in driving sustainability within the industry.
Its EV infrastructure initiative extends beyond Felixstowe, with several other sites scheduled for upgrades. John elaborated on the expansion: "Work is progressing at Tilbury, with installations at our rail terminals in Birmingham, Doncaster and Manchester set to begin later this month, alongside the arrival of our first #BEVs this year."
Government-backed ZEHID Programme boosts innovation
Maritime Transport is central to the UK government's Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme. The US$254m initiative, funded by the Department for Transport and delivered in collaboration with Innovate UK, aims to accelerate the adoption of zero-emission HGVs and establish the necessary charging infrastructure nationwide.
The ZEHID programme, announced in October 2023, focuses on large-scale demonstrations of battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell-powered HGVs. Given the complexity of decarbonising long-haul freight transport, the demonstrations are crucial for identifying viable zero-emission solutions for the largest HGVs.
Maritime's involvement in multiple ZEHID projects demonstrates its commitment to exploring various sustainable technologies. The company is at the forefront of the transition to cleaner freight transport solutions by actively participating in both battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell demonstrations.
"As a leading participant in three of the four major initiatives within the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID), a huge amount of work is going into making important developments like this happen and I want to thank everyone involved."
Advancing charging technology for heavy-duty EVs
A key component of Maritime Transport's initiative is the deployment of ultra-high-powered chargers capable of delivering up to 1MW of power. These advanced charging solutions address one of the primary barriers to the widespread adoption of electric HGVs: charging time and range limitations.
Maritime Transport's progress aligns with broader industry trends and government-backed efforts to decarbonise the logistics sector. As one of the UK's largest logistics operators, Maritime's proactive approach is expected to inspire other fleet operators to invest in zero-emission technologies.
As the rollout progresses, industry stakeholders will closely monitor the performance of these high-powered chargers in real-world conditions and their impact on the operational efficiency of electric HGVs. A successful implementation could be a blueprint for future large-scale EV infrastructure projects.
John concluded with an optimistic outlook: "Looking forward to seeing these chargers go live and continuing to push forward on our decarbonisation journey!"
