EV production is set to soar with ABB & automakers optimistic. However, long-term challenges loom for the industry as it navigates the EV adoption

The automotive industry is demonstrating confidence in the continued expansion of EV production throughout 2025, according to the latest 'Automotive Manufacturing Outlook' Survey by ABB Robotics in partnership with Automotive Manufacturing Solutions.

Findings from the survey reveal that 75% of automotive manufacturing leaders and suppliers anticipate growth in EV production in 2025. Notably, 31% expect an increase of over 10%, while 44% predict a more moderate rise of up to 10%.

In contrast, only 21% believe production levels will remain unchanged or decline. The figures demonstrate a strong industry-wide belief in the acceleration of EV production, driven by technological advancements and rising global demand for sustainable transport solutions.

However, despite the optimism surrounding short-term growth, concerns remain around whether the industry can meet long-term electrification targets.

Meeting EV targets remains a challenge

While the industry remains positive about the near future, confidence in achieving full EV production targets by regional deadlines (2030-2040) has weakened. The survey found that 31% of respondents now view these targets as unattainable — a rise from 27% in the previous year and 18% in 2022. Overall, 65% expressed scepticism about the feasibility of meeting full electrification goals within the projected timeline.

The shift in sentiment reflects growing concerns over external factors that extend beyond manufacturing capabilities. While carmakers have made strides in enhancing EV production efficiency, broader challenges — including consumer adoption rates and insufficient charging infrastructure — continue to pose significant obstacles to mass EV deployment.

The survey highlights that industry leaders believe success in EV adoption relies not only on manufacturing advancements but on policy support, economic incentives and infrastructure improvements.

Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Automotive Business Line

Joerg Reger, Managing Director of ABB Automotive Business Line, stated: “Automotive manufacturing professionals are optimistic about EV production growth in 2025 but unsure about reaching 100% EV production timetables due to factors now often beyond the factory environment.

“There’s strong evidence that EV manufacturing capabilities are now considerably improved and significant change has taken place in terms of introducing new production technology as well as upskilling workforces. ABB Robotics has made widescale changes to our own robotic and automation portfolio to support our customers and drive this transformation forward at pace.”

Hybrid vehicle production set to rise

In addition to EVs, hybrid powertrains are expected to see substantial production increases in 2025.

According to the survey, 67% of respondents predict a rise in plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) production, with 20% expecting growth of over 10%. Similarly, the prediction of hybrid EVs is expansion, with 62% of respondents forecasting an increase.

The continued strength of hybrid production highlights its role as a bridge between traditional internal combustion engines and fully electric models. With concerns over charging infrastructure and range anxiety still prevalent, hybrids remain a practical alternative for consumers making the transition to electric mobility.

The dual approach suggests that manufacturers are balancing market demand while working towards long-term EV adoption targets.

While the automotive industry remains committed to scaling up EV production, the survey highlights the challenges that persist in meeting full electrification goals. The need for robust infrastructure, consumer incentives and policy support is becoming increasingly evident as the industry progresses toward sustainable mobility.

Navigating the landscape

Daniel Harrison, Chief Analyst for Automotive Manufacturing Solutions

Daniel Harrison, Chief Analyst for Automotive Manufacturing Solutions stated: “Hybrid passenger vehicle production remains buoyant with the global manufacturing community expecting to produce more cars in 2025. The results support the survey’s main findings that the overall pace of EV adoption is currently not fast enough to reach some of the upcoming legislative deadlines for a 100% electric future.

“Within the manufacturing environment, the production of numerous powertrains across several model lines can create considerable complexity and additional cost, which has been pinpointed in our previous surveys produced in partnership with ABB Robotics.”

As the sector navigates this evolving landscape, continued investments in technology, workforce training and supportive policies will be critical in driving the shift towards a fully electric future.
