As General Motors (GM) moves into 2025, the company is making significant strides in EV innovation, manufacturing investment and job creation. In a recent blog post, Jeff Morrison, Senior VP of Global Purchasing and Supply Chain at GM, reflects on the company's progress and plans.

Investing in America's EV future

GM has positioned itself as a US leader in EV investment and innovation. Over the past five years, GM has invested more capital in battery manufacturing and infrastructure than any other American automaker. The commitment has yielded impressive results, with GM's US EV sales surging 50% in 2024 and its domestic EV market share doubling.

Its investment strategy extends beyond EVs, as Jeff highlights GM's continued commitment to petrol and diesel-powered vehicles. The balanced approach aims to drive progress across the automotive industry while creating jobs and delivering value to customers nationwide.

Job creation and economic impact

GM's impact on the American job market is substantial:

  • Employs approximately 90,000 people in the US
  • Generates US$12bn in taxable wages annually
  • Invested over US$35bn since 2014 to develop and support US facilities
  • Operates apprenticeship programs at nearly all of its 30+ manufacturing facilities

GM's strategic EV adoption has been a significant driver of job creation. A recent report by Atlas Public Policy and the BlueGreen Alliance Foundation found that the auto industry has created an estimated 240,000 new jobs through US$209bn in domestic EV manufacturing investments between 2000 and September 2024.

Addressing EV Material Challenges

A key focus for GM is addressing the tight supply of critical materials for EV production. To tackle the challenge, it is securing access to North American raw materials for battery production, ramping up recycling efforts and building a more resilient supply chain for key materials and components.

GM has made significant progress in securing its EV supply chain:

  • Multi-year, multi-billion-dollar agreement with Vianode for synthetic graphite anode materials, starting in 2027
  • Joint venture with Lithium Americas to develop the largest known lithium resource in the US at Thacker Pass, Nevada
  • Support for MP Materials'Materials' rare earth metal, alloy and magnet manufacturing facility in Fort Worth, Texas, with production expected to begin in late 2025
  • GM supplier e-VAC Magnetics breaking ground on a new magnet facility in Sumter, South Carolina, with production scheduled to start in early 2026

The role of public policy

Jeff highlights the crucial role of public policy in supporting GM's efforts. He advocates for permitting reform and incentives to boost domestic manufacturing and supply chain investment. The policies are essential for maintaining US leadership in the future of mobility.

As GM enters 2025, it remains committed to advancing EV innovation, developing the US manufacturing workforce and building superior supply chains.

Jeff states, "Policies like these are crucial to maintaining the US's leadership in the future of mobility". The forward-looking approach underscores GM's dedication to driving America's automotive industry into an electrified future while creating jobs and strengthening domestic manufacturing.
