Utah's Landmark Deal Ushers in Electric Aircraft Future

In a historic move, 47G | Utah Aerospace & Defense (47G) and BETA Technologies have signed an agreement that paves the way for electric aircraft and charging infrastructure in the US state of Utah.
The partnership marks a significant milestone in advanced air mobility (AAM) and positions Utah as a leader in sustainable aviation. With the 2034 Winter Olympic Games on the horizon, state officials are embracing innovative transportation solutions to transform mobility across the state.
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) and the Governor's Office of Economic Opportunity (GOEO) signed letters of support for the agreement, reinforcing the state's commitment to clean energy and cutting-edge technology.
Utah leads the charge in air mobility innovation
Governor of Utah Spencer Cox highlights the state's proactive approach.
"Utah is at the epicentre of cutting-edge innovations in the commercial aviation industry that will play a critical role in Utah's economic future," he says. "We are not just embracing the future of transportation—we are leading it."
The agreement seeks to establish a state-wide charging network for both electric aircraft and ground vehicles, create pilot training programmes and develop forecast models for flight operations. Additionally, the partnership will encourage public education initiatives and flight demonstrations to showcase the potential of AAM.
With Utah's rapid population growth—nine out of ten residents live in urban areas—state leaders recognise the need for sustainable and innovative mobility solutions to reduce congestion and improve transportation efficiency.
The role of BETA Technologies in electric aviation
BETA Technologies, known for its ALIA electric aircraft, is redefining the aviation industry. The ALIA aircraft can transport up to five passengers or 1,250 pounds of cargo, offering a practical and sustainable alternative to traditional aviation.
BETA's Charge Cubes, which have become the industry standard for air taxi manufacturers, are compatible with electric ground vehicles, marking a breakthrough in scalable, sustainable air and ground transportation.
Kyle Clark, Founder and CEO of BETA Technologies, points to Utah's strong legacy in aerospace: "Utah has a long legacy of excellence in aerospace, which BETA already knows first-hand as many components of our ALIA aircraft are built here.
"The state's spirit of innovation and progress has fueled remarkable transformation over the past decade, so this focus on preparing for the future comes as no surprise."
Economic impact and growth potential
The advanced air mobility market is projected to be worth US$1.5tn by 2040 and Utah is well positioned to capitalise on the booming industry.
By 2045, Utah's AAM sector is expected to generate:
- 11,000 new full-time jobs
- US$8bn in new business activity
- US$1.8bn in local, state and federal tax revenues
Jim Grover, Managing Director of Economic Growth for the GOEO, expresses enthusiasm for the collaboration.
"This partnership marks a pivotal moment in Utah's history, positioning our state at the forefront of advanced air mobility," he adds. "With Utah leading the charge, the opportunity will transform how we travel, connecting our talented workforce across regions, improving healthcare access and assisting with energy development in rural areas."
Project Alta: A vision for state-wide air transportation
47 G's Project Alta (Air Logistics Transportation Alliance) is a public-private initiative to establish a comprehensive air transportation network in Utah.
Key objectives include:
- Expanding drone package delivery services
- Creating reliable cargo air transport systems
- Developing air taxi networks for passenger mobility
Aaron Starks, President and CEO of 47G, emphasises the collaborative nature of the initiative.
"This partnership brings together organisations who all share the vision and collective resources to move Utah into a leading position nationally," he continues.
"Air mobility will eventually change how people commute, receive life-saving medical supplies and transport parcels and packages with greater efficiency."
Future of Utah's transportation
The landmark agreement between 47G, BETA Technologies, UDOT and GOEO signals a transformative shift in Utah's transportation landscape.
Utah is solidifying its position as a national leader in advanced air mobility by investing in electric aircraft, sustainable infrastructure and cutting-edge air mobility solutions.
With bold initiatives like Project Alta and BETA's electric aircraft technology, Utah is shaping the future of efficient, sustainable and connected transportation, ensuring a seamless mobility experience for residents and visitors alike.
