CUPRA Terramar Redefines SUV Design with Bold New Approach
With its bold, sporty proportions and unique design philosophy capturing the spirit of both land and sea, the Terramar embodies CUPRA's unmistakable DNA.
CUPRA proves that electrification and sportiness are a perfect match and, in 2023, the brand delivered more than 230,000 vehicles.
Each successive launch has marked a new milestone in defining the brand's character, with a challenging and original design: the CUPRA Ateca, a unique model in its segment; the CUPRA Leon, its first electrified model thanks to a plug-in hybrid electric engine; the CUPRA Formentor, the first model to be developed exclusively by the brand and the company's best-selling vehicle to date; and the CUPRA Born, the brand's first 100% electric vehicle.
Rooted in emotion
The CUPRA Terramar's story connects deeply with the brand's origins. It was born in 2018 at the Terramar Circuit near Barcelona. Six years later, the racetrack lends its name to the brand's newest model, reflecting CUPRA's journey from ambition to reality.
For CUPRA, design is driven by emotion rather than function.
Jorge Diez, the company's Design Director, explains: "We've always been committed to inspiring the world from Barcelona, but with Terramar, we've taken it even further."
Named after "terra" (land) and "mar" (sea), the CUPRA Terramar draws inspiration from Barcelona's vibrant architecture, Mediterranean culture and the robust character of its people. The goal was to create an authentic expression of where land meets the raw, elemental power of the sea.
Terramar's presence
CUPRA's design team enthusiastically embraced the challenge of achieving the dimensions of the Terramar.
Measuring 4.5 metres, the SUV combines the height and larger dimensions typical of its class with the muscular, high-contrast lines that define CUPRA's sporty aesthetic.
The front of the Terramar features a long, determined V-shaped bonnet that slopes towards the grille, adding to its presence. The rear is designed with strong shoulders emphasised by the car's lines and surfaces.
The design includes what Diez calls "the Rocker Wave," an ascending line along the lower side of the car, reminiscent of a wave lifting the vehicle and giving it a unique identity.
The prominent "shark nose" front and sharply defined rear evoke a powerful sense of tension, reflecting the human-centred design ethos of CUPRA.
Pushing boundaries
The CUPRA Terramar is set to make a significant impact on the European market, one of the fastest-growing segments for SUVs.
It introduces a new design language for the brand, showcasing CUPRA's full DNA through elements like copper-toned detailing and its signature eye design with three triangles.
As Diez explains, the Terramar is more than just a vehicle; it's an embodiment of CUPRA's vision to create a highly emotional, sporty, electrified SUV inspired by Barcelona's spirit.
The CUPRA Terramar is ready to challenge conventions and redefine what an SUV can deliver in terms of performance, design and emotion.
