Move out of the way Tesla, there is a new top selling EV brand in Europe.

BYD has surpassed Tesla to become Europe’s top-selling electric vehicle brand, having run at similar numbers globally for the past year or so.

In July 2025, BYD registered 13,503 new vehicles in Europe, marking an astonishing 225% year-on-year growth and overtaking Tesla, which saw registrations plummet 40% to only 8,837 units that month.

BYD's ascent began early in the year and solidified in April when the Chinese automaker consistently outpaced the American company in new registrations, cementing BYD’s leadership in both monthly and quarterly EV sales for the region.

While Tesla once dominated Europe's EV landscape, its market share has shrunk to 0.8%, whereas BYD's has grown to 1.2%, a leap that places BYD 50% ahead of Tesla in the region.

About BYD

BYD was founded in China and has rapidly transformed into one of the world’s largest EV producers by combining affordability, technological innovation and strategic expansion.

BYD’s bestselling models in Europe include the Dolphin Surf (globally known as Seagull), Seal U, the best-selling plug-in hybrid in June 2025, and the Atto 3 SUV. These vehicles appeal primarily due to their competitive pricing, modern features and the company’s growing dealership network.

The brand’s commitment to affordable electrification and local production, including new operations in Hungary, have helped BYD circumvent tariff hurdles and connect with European buyers more efficiently.

“We have 110,000 engineers, which is BYD’s biggest asset,” says BYD CEO, Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu.

BYD’s European bestsellers:

  • BYD Dolphin/Seagull: Compact, efficient, and highly affordable.
  • BYD Seal U: Popular as the region’s top-selling PHEV in recent months.
  • BYD Atto 3: Compact SUV tailored for urban families.

Tesla’s EV domination

Tesla, led by CEO Elon Musk, revolutionised the EV industry and remains synonymous with electric vehicle innovation for many.

Historically, Tesla’s Model Y and Model 3 have dominated Europe’s EV sales charts, with the Model Y retaining its place as Europe’s most popular battery electric vehicle for the first half of 2025 despite declining volumes.

However, Tesla’s decline is attributed to several factors: intensifying competition, lack of major vehicle updates, price pressures and Musk’s controversial political involvements that have impacted the brand’s reputation both in the US and Europe.

Tesla is now banking on a more affordable, mass-market EV, expected in late 2025, to reverse these trends.

Tesla’s European bestsellers:

  • Tesla Model Y: Europe’s favourite BEV in the first half of 2025, though suffering a sales contraction
  • Tesla Model 3: Second-best EV, offering an accessible entry point to Tesla’s lineup.

Global EV sales

EV sales worldwide continue breaking records.

More than 9.1 million units were sold globally during the first half of 2025, a 28% jump compared to last year.

China leads the market with 5.5 million sales, while Europe captured two million, marking a 26% growth. The European market has matured rapidly, especially in countries like Germany, the UK and Spain, which report 30-85% annual increases. Emerging markets and local automakers also shape the future, with Chinese brands like BYD pioneering new models and production strategies.

Global EV penetration is set to reach one in four new vehicles sold in 2025.

While North America lags behind due to regulatory uncertainty and France witnesses subsidy-driven declines, China and Europe continue to drive mass-market EV adoption.
