Screwfix Drives Green Logistics with Electric HGVs

Leading UK trade retailer Screwfix has taken a significant step toward sustainability by integrating state-of-the-art electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs) into its logistics operations.
The move aligns with the companyâs ambitious goal of achieving net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2040, reinforcing its dedication to reducing its environmental footprint.
Screwfix looks to maximise productivity
Founded in 1979, Screwfix is a leading DIY retailer which operates 900 stores across the UK and Ireland. It offers a multichannel service for trade professionals and serious DIYers and is known for its efficient click-and-collect service and innovative delivery options like Screwfix Sprint.
The organisation continues to expand its reach, both domestically and internationally, with a strong focus on customer convenience and sustainability initiatives.
Screwfix's newly-introduced eHGVs offer an impressive range of up to 200 miles per charge, depending on driving style, road conditions and weather.
The vehicles can complete routes with up to five deliveries before needing a charge, ensuring that they match the operational efficiency of Screwfixâs existing fleet.
Additionally, each truck will be used twice within 24 hours, maximising productivity and reducing emissions.
Renewable energy-powered charging infrastructure
To facilitate the smooth integration of eHGVs, Screwfix has installed dedicated charging stations at its Lichfield Distribution Centre, which is well connected to the UK motorway system.
The charging stations are powered by renewable energy, including electricity generated from the distribution centre’s extensive solar panel installation.
By leveraging sustainable energy sources, Screwfix enhances its commitment to environmentally friendly logistics.
Initially, the new eHGVs will initially operate on shorter-range routes from the Lichfield DC, servicing Screwfix stores across the West Midlands and Midlands regions. Birmingham, the UK's 'second city', will benefit from zero-emission deliveries as part of the initiative.
Alongside existing eco-friendly logistics measures, the introduction of these electric trucks significantly reduces the company’s reliance on fossil fuels while maintaining efficient delivery operations.
Emma Ross, Director of Logistics Operations at Screwfix, highlights the companyâs commitment to sustainability, stating: âAt Screwfix, we are committed to driving positive change and leading the way in sustainable logistics.
"Adding electric HGVs to our fleet is a testament to our dedication to reducing our environmental impact while still delivering the exceptional service our customers expect. Adding these electric vehicles to our existing HVO-fuelled fleet is another step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future.â
Achieving emission reductions
Screwfix has made significant strides in cutting its carbon footprint, halving its direct carbon emissions (Scope 1 and 2) since 2021. The reduction has been achieved through strategic initiatives, including transitioning 85% of its delivery fleet to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) and replacing fossil fuel heating in over 639 stores with air-source heat pumps.
The business remains committed to further reducing its emissions within the next two years while addressing Scope 3 emissions.
Adopting eHGVs marks a crucial milestone in Screwfixâs ongoing sustainability journey. By integrating innovative green logistics solutions, the company is not only cutting COâ emissions but also setting an example for the retail and logistics industries.
With continuous investments in cleaner transport technologies, Screwfix is paving the way for a more sustainable future in commercial distribution.
