SMMT: Registrations surge 70.1% to 8,390 units, driven by strong demand across all segments and government funding for zero-emission technologies

The UK's bus, coach and minibus market has experienced a remarkable resurgence, marking its best annual performance since 2008.

According to the latest figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), the market recorded its second consecutive year of growth in 2024, with a 70.1% increase in registrations. A total of 8,390 new buses were added to Britain's roads, making the UK the largest overall bus market in Europe.

The growth reflects increasing operator confidence in ridership levels and significant government investment in zero-emission technologies.

Surge in demand across all segments

The growth in 2024 was driven by robust demand across all bus segments.

Minibus registrations saw the most dramatic increase, doubling with a 102.5% rise to 4,816 units, accounting for 57.4% of the overall market.

Single and double-decker buses experienced substantial growth, with single-decker registrations increasing by 22.5% to 1,973 units and double-decker registrations surging by 69.6% to 1,601 units.

Regional performance varied significantly, with England, Wales and Northern Ireland all reporting strong increases in registrations. England led the way with a rise of 77.2%, while Wales and Northern Ireland saw even more dramatic surges of 184.9% and 52.4%, respectively.

England accounted for the majority of all new vehicle registrations at 87.4%. However, Scotland saw a decline in registrations, dropping by 15.6%, highlighting regional disparities in growth and investment.

Zero-emission uses leading the transition

The UK's commitment to net-zero transportation was reinforced in 2024, as the country maintained its position as Europe's largest zero-emission bus (ZEB) market by volume.

A total of 1,570 electric or hydrogen-powered buses were registered, representing a 35.5% increase from the previous year.

The surge in ZEB adoption was supported by greater model availability, with 17 models available across all three bus types.

Notably, zero-emission single and double-decker buses comprised 43.9% of new registrations, signalling a significant shift toward sustainable public transport solutions.

Government initiatives driving growth

The government's continued financial support is a key factor behind the expansion of the UK's zero-emission bus fleet. The Zero Emission Bus Regional Area (ZEBRA) scheme has played a crucial role in accelerating the transition, with the second phase of funding already awarded and additional orders placed for further deliveries in the coming year.

These investments are helping local authorities and transport operators to modernise their fleets while reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality across the country.

Industry experts including Mike Hawes, CEO at SMMT, have welcomed the market's strong performance.

Mike Hawes, Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT)

"Two years of growth and a 16-year high have cemented the recovery of Britain's bus sector, with passenger numbers continuing to rise alongside increasing deliveries of new zero-emission buses," says Mike.

"Government funding is helping deliver this standout performance and, as Europe's largest zero-emission bus market, we are well on our way to achieving our net zero goals, improving air quality and providing sustainable public transport in every region."

The positive trajectory of the UK's bus market suggests continued expansion in the coming years, particularly in the zero-emission sector. With further government funding, increased model availability and rising operator confidence, the industry is well-positioned to sustain its momentum.

However, regional disparities in adoption and infrastructure development will require ongoing attention to ensure that all parts of the UK benefit equally from the transition to cleaner, more efficient public transportation.

As the UK solidifies its leadership in the European bus market, the focus will remain on delivering sustainable and reliable transport solutions that meet the needs of an evolving urban landscape. With strong policy support and industry innovation, Britain's bus sector aims to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of public transport.
