ChargePoint introduces affordable, flexible EV charging for flats, easing installation challenges and enabling shared use for multiple residents

ChargePoint, a provider of networked EV charging solutions, is taking bold steps to make EV charging accessible in multi-unit buildings like flats and apartments. Recognising the barriers many residents face in transitioning to EVs due to limited charging options, ChargePoint has unveiled new solutions specifically tailored for these housing scenarios.

The development aims to meet the increasing demand for EV charging as more people consider the switch to EVs.

Installation challenges in multi-unit dwelling

Many apartment and flat complexes, especially multi-storey buildings or those above commercial spaces, face significant hurdles in installing EV charging facilities.

Limited parking, shared spaces, and outdated electrical infrastructure make retrofitting for EV chargers challenging and costly.

Joe Gorman, ChargePoint

Joe Gorman, ChargePoint's VP of Europe, highlights the company's commitment to bridging this gap, stating:

"ChargePoint aims to facilitate EV adoption by enabling charging for flats and other similar housing structures, a lack of which is one of the most common reasons a driver does not purchase an EV."

To address these barriers, it has launched affordable charging hardware alongside innovative software designed to streamline the installation and usage of shared chargers.

Innovative solutions for shared charging

A key component of ChargePoint's approach involves making EV charging accessible to multiple recipients in a building, with flexible payment options. ChargePoint's latest software allows multiple residents to share a single charger while paying individually. Each resident can be billed separately, and building owners or landlords can set the rates.

The system relieves building management of administrative burdens by collecting payments directly from users. ChargePoint manages and distributes the funds, creating a seamless solution for residents and property managers.

For added flexibility, the system allows for AC charging, which is cost-effective and often meets the needs of urban dwellers. ChargePoint enables multiple stations to be added over time by employing power-sharing capabilities without straining the building's existing electrical infrastructure.

The gradual approach makes expanding EV charging much more feasible, as it avoids costly utility upgrades that many older buildings would otherwise require.

Growing demand for EV Charging in multi-unit dwellings

Demand for EV charging in flats is proliferating. Over the past year, ChargePoint has seen a 38% increase in charging sessions within flats, while the number of charging ports has only increased by 17%. The discrepancy highlights the need for more chargers in residential settings as EV adoption accelerates.

"ChargePoint's latest solutions for this include more affordable chargers, software which can negate the need for costly incremental utility service and ways for multiple residents to utilise a single charger yet each pay for their own charging."

The emphasis on affordability and efficiency in installation aims to eliminate a common obstacle for EV drivers who live in flats, allowing for an easier transition to electric vehicles in urban housing environments.

Future-proofing multi-unit dwellings with flexible charging solutions

ChargePoint's new offerings extend beyond individual residents. The solution can be configured to grant guests or the public access, providing buildings with the flexibility to cater to a broader range of users.

The adaptability is particularly valuable for building owners looking to increase property value by accommodating the needs of EV-driving tenants.

ChargePoint's modular software and hardware solutions also allow for scaling as EV adoption grows. AC charging is the most affordable option for residential settings, minimises installation costs, and keeps initial investments low.

With power-sharing capabilities, landlords can incrementally add more charging stations without risking an overload on the building's power system.

Supporting the transition to EVs

By addressing the unique challenges of installing EV chargers in flats, ChargePoint is supporting a significant shift toward widespread EV adoption.

With flexible, affordable, and scalable solutions, ChargePoint's innovations empower urban residents to embrace sustainable transportation, moving closer to a future where EV charging is as accessible as any other essential utility.
