Peter Rawlinson is transforming Lucid Motors into a luxury EV powerhouse, merging advanced technology with sustainable, premium driving experiences

Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid Motors is a pivotal figure in the EV industry. Renowned for his technical expertise and strategic insight, he is transforming automotive luxury and sustainability.

Early life and education

Born in Wales, Peter's passion for mechanics bloomed early. He spent his teenage years rebuilding engines, foreshadowing his future in automotive design. His passion led him to Imperial College London, where he honed his engineering skills, graduating from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

A distinguished career in automotive engineering

Peter's career is marked by contributions to some of the automotive industry's most prestigious names. He began in the UK, working for Jaguar Cars and Lotus Engineering. At Jaguar, he rose to Principal Engineer, focusing on advanced body structure design and pioneering computer-aided design in automotive engineering. At Lotus, as Chief Engineer, he developed his expertise in high-performance car design, setting the stage for his future in EV technology.

His career took a pivotal turn when he joined Tesla in 2009 as VP of Vehicle Engineering. As Chief Engineer of the Tesla Model S, he helped prove that EVs could rival traditional combustion-engine cars in performance and luxury.

A clear vision for the future of EVs

Peter's journey with Lucid Motors began with a bold vision: to create the world's most advanced EV. The Lucid Air, the flagship sedan, embodies his ambition with cutting-edge technology, luxurious design and broad range. Peter envisions EVs not just as eco-friendly alternatives but as superior vehicles that redefine the future of mobility, outpacing traditional cars in every aspect. "We are at a pivotal moment in the automotive industry,"  Peter notes. "Lucid is proving that EVs can surpass combustion vehicles in terms of performance, luxury and efficiency. We aim to set new standards, not just match existing ones."

Engineering brilliance meets sustainable luxury

Peter's dedication to engineering excellence drives Lucid Motors' innovation. The Lucid Air's 520-mile range is achieved by focusing on aerodynamics, reducing weight and an efficient powertrain. For Peter, it exemplifies how great engineering creates exceptional products.

"We focus on efficiency at every level," he explains. "From the battery pack to the motor, every component is optimised to deliver the highest possible performance. However, we believe that luxury should not be compromised for sustainability. The Lucid Air offers an uncompromised, top-tier driving experience – something we think will resonate with customers who seek the best of both worlds."

The path to an authentic luxury brand

Peter is clear that Lucid Motors is not just an EV manufacturer; it is a luxury brand. "Luxury isn't just about high-end materials or advanced tech; it's about craftsmanship, design and attention to detail. We want to create cars that inspire emotion and passion,"  Peter asserts.

Lucid Motors has invested significantly in refining its product, ensuring every detail – from sustainable interiors to intuitive systems – delivers a seamless experience, showcasing meticulous craftsmanship and high standards.

Challenges and opportunities in the EV market

The road to success in the EV market is fraught with challenges, from securing supply chains to overcoming public scepticism. Peter acknowledges these hurdles but sees them as opportunities for growth. "We are entering a highly competitive market," he admits, "but that's precisely where we want to be. Competition drives innovation and we are ready to meet it head-on."

Lucid Motors' investment in refinement ensures that every detail, from sustainable interiors to advanced systems, provides a seamless, high-quality experience. "Our approach is to build a resilient supply chain while exploring sustainable alternatives wherever possible," he adds.

Scaling production while maintaining quality

As Lucid Motors scales production, maintaining quality and consistency becomes paramount.  Peter emphasises the importance of a phased approach to growth. "Scaling too quickly can compromise quality and that is something we cannot afford," he says. "We are committed to a disciplined ramp-up of our production capabilities to ensure every Lucid car meets the highest standards."

The company plans to expand its product line beyond Lucid Air with an SUV, the Lucid Gravity, which Peter expects to debut soon. Notwithstanding, Peter is eyeing global expansion, with plans to enter the European and Middle Eastern markets. "Our goal is to establish Lucid as a global luxury brand representing the pinnacle of EV technology," he states.

A leader committed to innovation and sustainability

Lucid Motors' significant investment in product refinement ensures that every element, from sustainable interiors to advanced systems, creates a seamless experience, highlighting superior craftsmanship and exceptional standards.

"Lucid represents more than just a new car company; we're part of a new paradigm in mobility,"  Peter says. "We're here to prove that EVs can be aspirational, exciting and, most importantly, attainable for a broader market. We want to make a positive impact – not just on the automotive industry, but on the world."
