Stellantis Unveils STLA Frame: 690-Mile Range
Stellantis N.V. has introduced the STLA Frame platform, explicitly designed for full-size, body-on-frame trucks and SUVs.
The new platform caters to the increasing demand for multi-energy vehicles that deliver exceptional power, efficiency and versatility.
A platform built for versatility and performance
The STLA Frame sets a new benchmark with its ability to support various propulsion systems, including battery electric (BEV), range-extender electric vehicles (REEV), hybrid, internal combustion and even hydrogen-powered technologies. Tailored for North America and select global markets, it targets the most demanding users who prioritise towing capacity, payload and range.
Key highlights include:
- Unmatched Range: Up to 690 miles (1,100 km) with the REEV system and 500 miles (800 km) for BEV.
- Best-in-Class Capabilities: Payload capacity of 2,700 pounds (1,224 kg) and towing capacity of 14,000 pounds (6,350 kg).
- Off-road Readiness: Water fording up to 24 inches (610 mm), ensuring capability in challenging conditions.
Meeting diverse needs with multi-energy propulsion
Stellantis designed the STLA Frame to support a broad propulsion lineup, enabling a smooth transition for drivers considering their first EV. A standout feature is the REEV system, combining:
- A battery pack.
- Front and rear electric drive modules (EDMs).
- An onboard generator.
- An internal combustion engine.
The configuration eliminates a direct mechanical link between the engine and wheels.
Instead, the generator powers the EDMs and recharges the battery, ensuring drivers maintain full range and power when hauling heavy loads.
Carlos Tavares, CEO at Stellantis, summed up the innovation, stating:
“Like STLA Medium and STLA Large, STLA Frame combines an unprecedented range with new levels of capability and performance to offer best-in-class range, payload and towing for our customers who need reliable and powerful trucks and SUVs.”
The STLA Frame is constructed from advanced high-strength steel, blending durability and reduced weight. Key structural features include:
- A widened centre section housing the battery pack, with reinforced frame rails for impact protection.
- A full-length belly pan designed to minimise aerodynamic drag and maximise range.
The platform accommodates liquid-cooled battery packs ranging from 159 to over 200 kWh, future-proofed to support emerging energy storage technologies. It offers seamless integration with 400-volt and 800-volt EV architectures, ensuring DC fast charging up to 350 kW.
With this setup, drivers can add 100 miles of range in 10 minutes.
Optimised driving experience
Front and rear EDMs, rated at up to 250 kW, deliver standard all-wheel drive and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds. Flexible suspension designs, including air suspension, enhance comfort across diverse terrains and loads.
Charging innovations and bi-directional power
Vehicles built on the STLA Frame offer bi-directional charging, enabling:
- Charging other EVs.
- Powering homes during outages.
- Feeding electricity back to the grid.
REEVs can add 50 miles in 10 minutes, while BEVs can achieve 100 miles of range in the same timeframe.
Stellantis’ electrification goals
The STLA Frame is the latest in Stellantis’ electrification roadmap under the Dare Forward 2030 strategic plan.
Following the launches of STLA Medium and STLA Large, this platform underscores Stellantis’ US$54.5bn investment in electrification. The company aims to sell 100% of BEV passenger cars in Europe and 50% in the U.S. by 2030.
As Stellantis continues its electrification journey, the STLA Frame promises to redefine the possibilities for full-size trucks and SUVs, bringing unmatched performance and versatility to the market.
