TotalEnergies & SSE: Boosting EV Charging Infrastructure
TotalEnergies and SSE have partnered to establish "Source," a joint venture (JV) to increase EV charging infrastructure in the UK and Ireland.
Under the auspices of Source, the JV will deploy up to 3,000 high-power, strategically-located charge points within the next five years.
The aim is to cater to growing demand from EV and fleet owners for fast, reliable charging solutions.
Source to deploy EV hubs
Source's ambitious plan includes the deployment of 300 high-power charge point hubs, each equipped with 150 kW or higher capacity.
These hubs will serve as vital nodes in the EV charging network, targeting a significant 20% market share in the UK and Ireland.
Powered by renewable energy from SSE and TotalEnergies, the hubs will be strategically positioned in prime urban locations to ensure accessibility and convenience.
Electric mobility
TotalEnergies brings substantial expertise to the JV, with a global network of more than 64,000 charge points.
In the UK, it operates the Source London network, consisting of 2,600 charge points in the capital.
The JV aligns with TotalEnergies' broader strategy to expand its high-power charging infrastructure across Europe, with plans to operate more than 1,000 sites by 2028.
Overall, TotalEnergies places sustainability at the heart of its strategy, projects and operations.
"TotalEnergies is proud to contribute to the development of electric mobility to decarbonise transportation in the UK and Ireland," says Mathieu Soulas, Senior Vice President of New Mobilities at TotalEnergies.
"Extending our European network and staking a key position as a reference high-power charging player is a great opportunity. We want to offer our customers – passenger cars and fleet alike – a nationwide, ultra-fast and reliable charging service that allows them to travel efficiently with complete peace of mind."
TotalEnergies contributes to offshore wind projects and traditional energy production.
Its commitment extends to sustainable solutions, including EV charging and renewable energy integration, ensuring the region's diversified and resilient energy portfolio.
Clean energy solutions
SSE provides clean energy solutions across the UK and Ireland and is a vital partner in the Source initiative.
Its portfolio includes onshore and offshore wind farms, electricity transmission networks as well as energy products and services.
"SSE is already leading in decarbonising the UK and Ireland's power system, including building the world's largest offshore wind farm and transforming electricity networks," adds Neil Kirkby, Managing Director of Enterprise at SSE.
"Now, the agreement will help accelerate progress towards a decarbonised transport system, ensuring the vehicles that keep the economy moving can do so more sustainably and efficiently."
Future of transport
Source represents decarbonising transport in the UK and Ireland, addressing increasing demand for reliable, ultra-fast EV charging infrastructure.
Source's strategic deployment in Ireland aligns with government targets to significantly increase the number of EVs on the roads by 2030.
By enhancing EV charging infrastructure, Source supports the transition to cleaner transportation and strengthens consumer trust in the reliability and accessibility of EV charging facilities nationwide.
Through the Source joint venture, TotalEnergies and SSE aim to redefine the landscape of EV charging infrastructure in the UK and Ireland.
