Team Brady's Race for Change
In the E1 electric boat series, Team Brady has linked race points to plastic removal, teaming up with 4ocean to clean coastlines and protect marine life

Team Brady, a contender in the all-electric E1 powerboat series, is launching a new sustainability push called Race for Change.

The initiative aims to merge performance on the water with tangible environmental impact, with every championship point translating directly into plastic waste removals.

At the centre of this effort is the 4ocean Foundation, Team Brady’s official Ocean Cleanup Partner, which is committing to remove 100kg of plastic waste from marine environments for every point the team earns throughout the 2025 season.

Converting race points into ocean action

The RaceBird boats used by Team Brady are fully electric, powered by battery-based propulsion and designed with foiling technology.

Foiling lifts the hull above the water at speed, reducing drag and energy use.

This approach not only lowers the carbon footprint of racing but also shows the potential of electric propulsion in high-performance marine transport.

Through Race for Change, the team is linking its race points to environmental outcomes.

With 104 points already earned and 42 more available each race weekend, the impact could be substantial.

At 100kg of plastic removed per point, Team Brady’s racing performance hopes to translate into thousands of kilograms of waste cleared from the world’s oceans.

Tom Brady, the former NFL quarterback and now Team Owner, explains: “At Team Brady, we don’t just race to win, we race to lead, and that means driving change both on and off the water.

Tom Brady, Arguably the greatest ever NFL quarterback, Tom won seven Super Bowls and five Super Bowl MVP awards during a 23-year career that included 20 seasons with the New England Patriots

“Race For Change is a movement that brings together our team, our partners, and our fans to create real-world impact through the power of sport.

"With some incredible partners, we’re taking action where it matters most and I’m proud to be at the forefront of it all."

The team’s Co-Principals Ben King and Joe Sturdy say the programme links sporting success directly to environmental benefits: “It’s very cool that every point we take home this year will have real world impact and every time we push for a podium, we’re also pushing for a cleaner ocean.”

How the 4ocean Foundation supports the mission

As a nonprofit organisation, the 4ocean Foundation focuses on cleaning oceans, rivers and coastlines.

Its method involves both direct waste removal and educational outreach.

To date, the organisation reports it has extracted more than 42 million pounds of plastic and debris from aquatic ecosystems worldwide.

Now, as the founding partner of Race for Change, 4ocean is not only committing to remove 100kg of plastic per point but will also conduct ongoing beach and waterway clean-ups as part of the initiative.

This connection between motorsport and ocean conservation is structured to produce visible, measurable outcomes.

Race for Change’s approach also highlights how EV technologies and climate awareness can combine in competitive sport.

The E1 series itself uses electric powerboats exclusively, demonstrating what EV propulsion can achieve beyond roads and into the water.

Ben King and Joe Sturdy reinforce the power of sport in this context: “We believe sport has the power to accelerate progress, raise awareness and unite people around global challenges like ocean health and sustainability.”

A network of partners powering sustainability

While the 4ocean Foundation is the face of ocean clean-up, several other companies are helping Team Brady put sustainability into practice behind the scenes.

Racing Force Group, for instance, supplies Team Brady’s OMP race suits, which are nearly 100% recyclable.

Their design focuses on using materials and processes that minimise waste and extend the lifespan of each suit.

Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), a global player in telematics, which refers to systems that gather data from vehicles to improve performance or safety, contributes insight into how driving behaviour impacts sustainability.

CMT data shows that safer drivers can cut fuel use by up to 5%, saving around 238 litres per year.

Although E1 boats do not burn fuel, the data principles apply across wider EV adoption.

Teamwear supplier OCEANR provides another layer of sustainability.

By creating garments from recycled polyester made from post-consumer plastic, OCEANR claims to have diverted more than 1.5 million plastic bottles away from natural environments.

Their focus on circularity, designing for reuse or recycling, aligns closely with Race for Change’s environmental aims.
